The Best Restaurants in King’s Cross

Seven checked at source and sorted by how long you have, because most people here have a train. Plus the ten minute walk nobody warns you about.

A warmly lit restaurant with exposed brick walls, a bar and wooden tables

King’s Cross spent a century as somewhere you passed through and about a decade becoming somewhere you arrive. The King’s Cross restaurants followed the railway money into Coal Drops Yard and Granary Square, and the result is the newest serious eating district in London.

It is also the one where the question is different from everywhere else. Most people here have a train. Six Underground lines, the East Coast main line and the Eurostar all land within a few hundred metres, so the useful thing is not a ranking. It is how long each place takes to get into and how far it is from a platform.

So that is how this is arranged: what you can do with two hours, and what needs an evening.

The geography of King’s Cross restaurants, which catches people out

King’s Cross the district is a ten minute walk from King’s Cross the station. Granary Square and Coal Drops Yard are north up King’s Boulevard, past the Regent’s Canal. The signs are good and the walk is pleasant, but a nine minute walk with a suitcase before a booking is not what most people picture.

The exception is German Gymnasium, which is two minutes from the concourse and is the only one on this page you can reach without committing to the walk.

If you have two hours before a train

German Gymnasium, King’s Boulevard

A grand hall in the Victorian gymnasium built for the German Gymnastics Society, two minutes from the station, open from eight in the morning. It is the most useful restaurant in the postcode for reasons that have nothing to do with the cooking.

German Gymnasium

Address
King’s Boulevard, King’s Cross, N1C 4BU
Nearest
King’s Cross St Pancras, a two minute walk
Hours
Monday and Tuesday 8am to 11pm, Wednesday to Friday 8am to midnight, Saturday 9am to 1am, Sunday 10am to 11pm
Booking
Through OpenTable or on 020 7287 8000. Card details are required to hold a booking
Standing
In the Victorian gymnasium built for the German Gymnastics Society

Two minutes from the concourse and open from eight in the morning, which together make it the default when there is a train involved. They take card details to hold the table, so a no show costs you something. Saturday runs to one in the morning, the latest kitchen on this page by two hours.

Dishoom, Stable Street

Dishoom King’s Cross

Address
5 Stable Street, N1C 4AB
Nearest
King’s Cross St Pancras
Hours
Monday to Wednesday 8am to 11pm, Thursday and Friday 8am to midnight, Saturday 9am to midnight, Sunday 9am to 11pm
Booking
Bookings any size before 6pm. After 6pm they take bookings only for six or more
Standing
In a converted railway building off Stable Street

The rule that decides everything here: before six they will book you a table whatever the size of your party, after six the tables are walk in only unless there are six of you. Their own estimate of the evening wait is thirty minutes to an hour. Breakfast from eight has little or no queue, which is the answer nobody uses and the right one if you have a train.

The Lighterman, Granary Square

The Lighterman

Address
3 Granary Square, N1C 4BH
Nearest
King’s Cross St Pancras, about nine minutes on foot
Standing
Three floors of glass over the canal basin at Granary Square

All day casual dining and drinking across three floors, with the terraces over the water on the upper two. It is the one place here built for turning up rather than booking, and the view of the canal basin is the reason to take the stairs rather than a table on the ground floor.

If you have an evening

Coal Office, Bagley Walk

Assaf Granit’s kitchen in a curved building over the coal drops, and the most serious cooking in King’s Cross. The hours are unusual and they are the thing to plan around.

Coal Office

Address
2 Bagley Walk, N1C 4PQ
Nearest
King’s Cross St Pancras, about ten minutes on foot
Hours
Lunch Tuesday 12pm to 1.30pm, Wednesday to Saturday 12pm to 2.30pm, Sunday 12pm to 3.30pm, no lunch Monday. Dinner Monday 6pm to 8pm, Tuesday and Wednesday 5.30pm to 8.45pm, Thursday to Saturday 5.30pm to 9pm, Sunday 5.30pm to 8pm
Booking
020 3848 6086
Standing
Adjacent to Granary Square and Coal Drops Yard

Read those hours twice. Tuesday lunch is ninety minutes long. Monday has no lunch at all and a dinner service that ends at eight. Sunday dinner finishes at eight. This is a kitchen that closes earlier than almost anything of its standard in London and it is the most common way to lose the booking.

Barrafina, Coal Drops Yard

Barrafina Coal Drops Yard

Address
Unit 85, Coal Drops Yard, viaduct level, N1C 4DQ
Nearest
King’s Cross St Pancras
Hours
Sunday to Tuesday midday to 3pm and 5pm to 9.30pm, Wednesday to Saturday midday to 3pm and 5pm to 10pm
Booking
Takes reservations and walk ins. Main room tables for up to seven open 14 days ahead
Standing
Counter dining on the viaduct level of Coal Drops Yard

This branch takes both reservations and walk ins, which the Soho one famously does not, and guides apply the no bookings rule to the whole group. There are a limited number of outside tables that are walk in only and fair weather only, so the terrace is never bookable however far ahead you ask.

Granary Square Brasserie

Granary Square Brasserie

Address
1 Granary Square, N1C 4AA
Nearest
King’s Cross St Pancras, a nine minute walk
Hours
Monday 8.30am to 11pm, Tuesday 8.30am to 11.30pm, Wednesday and Thursday 8.30am to 11pm, Friday 9am to 11.30pm, Saturday 9.30am to midnight, Sunday 9.30am to 11pm
Booking
Tables of 2 to 14 online, larger parties by email
Standing
Facing the fountains on Granary Square

Fourteen people online without a conversation, which is a high ceiling and the reason to keep this one for a group. Open from half past eight on a weekday, so it covers breakfast through to late, and it faces the fountains, which in summer is the best table in King’s Cross and in February is a window onto a wet square.

Rotunda, Kings Place

Rotunda Bar and Restaurant

Address
Kings Place, 90 York Way, N1 9AG
Nearest
King’s Cross St Pancras
Hours
Monday 4pm to 11pm, Tuesday to Friday midday to midnight, Saturday 11am to midnight, Sunday midday to 8pm. The terrace closes at 9.30pm and the last Sunday restaurant booking is 6.30pm
Booking
Groups of 10 or more pre order. Tables over five need pre authorisation
Standing
On the canal at Kings Place, with a terrace over the water

Their own note is the useful one: a booking is for a table inside the restaurant, not on the terrace, and the terrace shuts at half past nine regardless. Sunday takes its last booking at half past six. Monday does not open until four.

Practical notes

Allow ten minutes from the platform, not two. Everything except German Gymnasium is a walk north through the development. It is well signposted and pleasant and it is still ten minutes with a bag.

The kitchens close early here. Coal Office finishes dinner at eight on a Monday and a Sunday. Rotunda takes its last Sunday booking at half past six. This is a district built on a weekday commuter and office trade, and the hours follow it.

The terraces are the point in summer and a liability in winter. Granary Square, the Lighterman and Rotunda all face water, and all three are a different proposition in February. Book inside and treat the terrace as a bonus, which is also what Rotunda tells you to do.

Coal Drops Yard is two levels. Barrafina is on the viaduct level, which is up, and people miss it entirely from the lower yard.

Where to go next

Eating near the stations is the version of this question for the other termini, including the row of South Indian rooms on Drummond Street three minutes from the Euston departure boards.

If the train is the point, how much the Tube costs and the Night Tube guide cover getting in and out. The best restaurants in London is the city-wide list.

Comparing neighbourhoods: Shoreditch is the closest in character and twenty minutes east, and Marylebone, Covent Garden, Canary Wharf, Notting Hill and Mayfair are the rest.

Questions we get asked

What are the best restaurants in King's Cross?

Coal Office on Bagley Walk for the most serious cooking, Barrafina in Coal Drops Yard for counter dining that takes both bookings and walk ins, and German Gymnasium for the grand room two minutes from the station. Dishoom on Stable Street is the one people queue for, and the queue is avoidable: they take bookings for any size before 6pm.

Where can you eat near King's Cross station before a train?

German Gymnasium on King’s Boulevard, which is a two minute walk from the concourse and opens at eight in the morning. Everything else in the district is a nine or ten minute walk north through Granary Square and Coal Drops Yard, which is pleasant on foot and is not what people expect when they book a table forty minutes before departure.

How far is Coal Drops Yard from King's Cross station?

About ten minutes on foot, north up King’s Boulevard, past Granary Square and over the Regent’s Canal. It is well signposted and the walk is a good one, but it is a walk. Coal Drops Yard itself is on two levels and Barrafina sits on the upper viaduct level, which people miss from the yard below.

Do you need to book restaurants in King's Cross?

For Coal Office yes, and early, because it closes earlier than almost anything of its standard. Dishoom books any party before 6pm and only groups of six or more after. Barrafina at Coal Drops Yard takes both reservations and walk ins, and its outside tables are walk in only whatever you ask for.

What time do King's Cross restaurants close?

Earlier than the postcode suggests, because the trade is offices and commuters rather than residents. Coal Office ends dinner at eight on Monday and Sunday. Rotunda takes its last Sunday booking at half past six and shuts its terrace at half past nine. German Gymnasium is the outlier, running to one in the morning on a Saturday.

Is King's Cross good for restaurants?

It is now, which is recent. The development around Granary Square and Coal Drops Yard brought in Coal Office, Barrafina and Dishoom within a few years of each other, and the district went from a place you passed through to one of the newer serious eating areas in London. It still keeps commuter hours.
