Nothing in Coal Drops Yard opens before eleven in the morning.
“Opening hours for shops in Coal Drops Yard are Monday to Saturday, 11 am – 7 pm and Sunday, 11 am – 5 pm.”
That is an eight hour shopping day, and six on a Sunday. For a destination two minutes from King’s Cross and St Pancras, where the trains start before six, it is a late start and an early finish.
The practical consequence: if you have an hour before a train, it has to be after eleven. Arriving off a morning Eurostar, there is nothing open to walk to.
The restaurants are the exception and keep their own, much longer hours. Which is the real shape of the place: a shopping centre that works as a dining destination.
Every terrace is heated, all year
The detail that makes it a winter option rather than a summer one.
“The restaurants all have charming heated terraces so you can dine outside or inside, year-round.”
That is unusual in London, where an outdoor table in January is normally a gamble. It also explains why the Yard looks busy in weather that empties other courtyards.
Compare it with Seven Dials Market, whose terrace is uncovered and cleared at 10pm, and Kingly Court, which covers its courtyard only for the winter.
You can check the stock before you come
A genuinely useful tool almost nobody knows exists.
Stock Search lets you see what is physically in the shops at King’s Cross and Coal Drops Yard before you travel.
For a site of more than 45 shops where much of the appeal is independent and one-off stock, that turns a speculative trip into a specific one. It covers homeware, womenswear, menswear, and wellbeing and beauty.
What is actually there
More than 45 shops, plus cafés, bars and restaurants, in the converted Victorian coal drops where coal from the north was unloaded from the railway.
The restaurants named by the estate:
Barrafina, the Spanish counter group.
Coal Office, the Assouline and Ottolenghi collaboration.
Morty & Bobs and The Drop for the more casual end.
And on Lower Stable Street, the smaller parade below the main yard: Hiden Curry, Okan and MATCHADO.
Lower Stable Street is worth knowing by name, because it is a separate level and easy to walk past entirely.
Where it is, and what is around it
Coal Drops Yard, King’s Cross, London N1C, minutes from King’s Cross and St Pancras.
It sits inside the wider King’s Cross estate, which puts several things on this site within a few minutes of each other: Dishoom King’s Cross on Stable Street, the Everyman cinema on Handyside Street, and Granary Square with its fountains.
Tables across the estate can be booked through the King’s Cross site rather than venue by venue.
How to plan it
Nothing opens before 11am. Not Monday, not Sunday.
Shops shut at 7pm, and 5pm on Sunday. The restaurants run much later.
Coming in winter: the terraces are heated, at every restaurant, year-round.
Looking for something specific: use Stock Search first.
Do not miss Lower Stable Street, which is a separate level below the main yard.
An hour before a train: this is the walk, provided it is after eleven.

How to get in
Nothing opens before 11am, on any day of the week, and the shops close at 7pm and 5pm on Sunday, which makes it useless for an early train and good for a late lunch. Every restaurant has a heated terrace usable year-round, unlike most London courtyards. A Stock Search tool lets you check what is physically in the shops before travelling. Lower Stable Street is a separate level below the main yard holding Hiden Curry, Okan and MATCHADO, and is easy to walk past.
Where to go next
Dishoom King’s Cross is on Stable Street and the King’s Cross restaurants page covers the rest of the estate.
Shopping in London compares the destinations, and the food markets cover the halls.
