The Best Restaurants in Shoreditch: Book Around the Hours

Rochelle Canteen serves supper for two hours and clears the room by ten. Where to eat in Shoreditch, and why the hour matters more than the restaurant.

A dark dining room with warm light through the windows

Shoreditch eats early and it eats fast. That is the thing to understand before you book anything here, because Shoreditch restaurants keep windows rather than opening hours, and several of them have stopped serving by the time central London sits down.

Rochelle Canteen states it outright: supper runs 5.30pm to 7.30pm, and guests must leave by 10pm. That is not a quirk. It is the pattern.

Rochelle Canteen

Address
Rochelle School, Arnold Circus, Shoreditch
Nearest
Shoreditch High Street or Hoxton
Hours
Lunch Monday to Sunday 12pm to 2.45pm. Supper Wednesday to Saturday 5.30pm to 7.30pm
Standing
Open since 2004. A walled garden set back from the street

Read the supper window again: two hours, Wednesday to Saturday only, and their own rule is that guests must leave by 10pm. This is an early dinner or it is lunch. Treat it as either and it is one of the best rooms in east London.

A daily changing menu of classic and modern European cooking in the old bike shed of a Victorian school, behind a wall, away from the street. It started in 2004 with one big sharing table and a box for a till.

The garden is the reason to come in summer and the reason to book weeks ahead.

Brat

Address
First floor, 4 Redchurch Street, E1 6JL
Nearest
Shoreditch High Street
Hours
Kitchen Monday to Sunday, 12pm to 10pm

A second site, Brat X Climpson's Arch, at Arch 374 Helmsley Place in Hackney

The exception to the whole postcode: a ten hour kitchen, seven days, straight through. When everything else in Shoreditch has stopped serving or has not started, this is open. Note the address, because it is on the first floor and people walk past it.

Wood fire cooking, and the room that turned Redchurch Street from a shortcut into a destination.

Smoking Goat

Address
64 Shoreditch High Street, E1 6JJ
Nearest
Shoreditch High Street
Hours
Kitchen Monday to Saturday 12pm to 11pm, Sunday 12pm to 10pm
Standing
Thai bar and grill, from the same group as Brat

The latest kitchen of the four here, and the one to hold in reserve for an evening that has run long. Eleven at night on a Saturday is a real option in a postcode where most of the good rooms shut at ten.

Regional Thai over fire, loud and busy, and the natural second stop after a drink rather than the destination you build the night around.

Set lunch and set dinner menus published alongside the a la carte

Book by the size of your party, because they split it three ways: up to six online, seven to twelve through a separate form, and anything larger through the group bookings page. Turning up with nine people and one booking for six is the way this goes wrong.

Regional Thai cooking in a converted warehouse, and one of the few kitchens in this part of London running a set menu at both services. If price is the deciding factor, start there rather than with the a la carte.

The Clove Club

Nearest
Old Street or Shoreditch High Street
Hours
Lunch Wednesday to Saturday 12.00 to 13.30. Dinner Monday to Saturday 18.30 to 20.30
Booking
Online for 1 to 6 guests, up to three months ahead on a rolling basis. Larger parties by email
Price
Lunch tasting £185, lunch three courses £95, dinner tasting £285

The serious one, and it keeps the shortest windows on this page: lunch bookings run for ninety minutes and dinner for two hours. Read the cancellation terms before you book, because they are unusually hard.

The tasting menu here has two prices and the difference is not small. Dinner is £285, but the same full tasting menu is £185 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. A hundred pounds a head, for the same food, decided entirely by which night you pick. There is also a shorter dinner tasting at £225 on Mondays and Thursdays.

The booking terms are the strictest in this postcode and they are worth reading twice. Changes made with less than 72 hours notice are charged at £125 per person for lunch and £155 per person for dinner. That covers cancelling, rescheduling, and reducing the size of your party. Their own wording is that it applies to all cancellations and is not discretionary. Dropping from four people to three on the day costs £155.

One more, which is cheaper but catches people: dietary requirements not given in advance are charged at £20 per person if the menu has to change on the day. Tell them when you book. There is no strict dress code, though most guests dress smart casual.

Hoppers

Nearest
Shoreditch High Street
Hours
Monday to Wednesday 12pm to 3pm and 5.30pm to 10pm. Thursday and Friday 12pm to 3pm and 5.30pm to 10.45pm. Saturday 12pm to 10.45pm. Sunday 12pm to 9pm

Sri Lankan and south Indian, and the clearest example on this page of the split service that defines eating here: it shuts for two and a half hours in the middle of the afternoon and opens again at half past five.

The afternoon gap is the thing to plan around. Between 3pm and 5.30pm the kitchen is closed, which in a postcode full of galleries and markets is exactly when a lot of people start looking for lunch. Sunday is the exception, running straight through from noon to nine.

What is not there any more

Lyle’s closed in May 2025. It was one of the best restaurants in this postcode and it still appears on current Shoreditch lists as though you could book it. You cannot.

A second trap in the same area is not a closure at all: St John Bread and Wine in Spitalfields serves nothing before noon, which makes it a poor answer to every “Shoreditch breakfast” recommendation it appears in.

How to book Shoreditch restaurants

Decide the hour before the restaurant. This is the reverse of how people normally choose and it is the right way round here. Before 7.30pm the whole list is open to you. At 9pm it is Brat, Smoking Goat or Hoppers. At 10.30pm it is Smoking Goat, on a Saturday. Between 3pm and 5.30pm, Hoppers is shut and the Clove Club has finished lunch, so the middle of the afternoon is the genuine dead zone.

Lunch is genuinely competitive with dinner. Rochelle Canteen serves lunch seven days against supper on four, and it is the same kitchen. In a postcode with these hours, midday is not the consolation prize.

Shoreditch High Street is the station. Old Street is a roundabout fifteen minutes north west and serves a different part of the area entirely.

Everything here was taken from each restaurant’s own published information in September 2026 and rechecked on 2 October 2026, except Brat, whose own site could not be loaded that day. Hours in this postcode change more than most. Confirm before travelling.

Where to go next

Our Shoreditch guide covers the markets, the museums and which day to come, and Hackney is twenty minutes north east with the same short week problem.

For the wider field, the best restaurants in London covers the city and the set menus cover where the same kitchens cost less.

Questions we get asked

What is the best restaurant in Shoreditch?

The Clove Club is the most serious kitchen in the postcode, with dinner bookings running 18.30 to 20.30 and a tasting menu at 285 pounds, or 185 on a Tuesday or Wednesday for the same food. Rochelle Canteen is the best room, if you can eat inside its window: supper runs 5.30pm to 7.30pm, Wednesday to Saturday only, and guests must leave by 10pm. Brat on Redchurch Street is the best answer at any other hour, because its kitchen runs straight through from noon to ten, seven days.

Where can you eat late in Shoreditch?

Smoking Goat at 64 Shoreditch High Street, where the kitchen runs to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 10pm on Sunday. Brat serves until 10pm every day. Almost everything else good in this postcode has stopped before that, which is the single most useful thing to know about eating here.

Is Lyle's still open?

No. It closed in May 2025 and still appears on current Shoreditch restaurant lists. If you are checking any recommendation for this area, go to the restaurant's own website rather than a listing: when the only pages still selling a place belong to somebody else, it has gone.

Do you need to book restaurants in Shoreditch?

Yes, and for som saa you need to book by party size, because they split it three ways: up to six online, seven to twelve through a separate form, larger groups through the group bookings page. Rochelle Canteen's garden books weeks ahead in summer.

How much is The Clove Club and what happens if you cancel?

Dinner is a 285 pound tasting menu, though the same full tasting menu is 185 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and a shorter dinner tasting is 225 on Mondays and Thursdays. Lunch is 185 for the tasting or 95 for three courses. The cancellation policy is the strict part: any change with less than 72 hours notice is charged at 125 per person for lunch and 155 for dinner, and that includes rescheduling and reducing your party size, not just cancelling outright. Their own wording is that it is not discretionary.
