Sky Garden: Is It Free, and How to Get a Ticket

Free, but ticketed, and the tickets are released weekly up to three weeks out. What to do when they have gone, where it actually is, and why the dress code answer is not what their own site says.

Yes, Sky Garden is free. That is the question almost everybody arrives with, and the answer surprises people because it is the highest public garden in London and the view from it is better than several platforms charging thirty pounds a head.

Free does not mean walk in, though, and that is where it goes wrong.

Free, but ticketed

You need a ticket, it costs nothing, and you book it in advance for a timed slot. Tickets are released on a weekly basis, up to three weeks ahead of your visit, in Sky Garden’s own words. They go quickly.

Walk ins depend entirely on spare capacity and are not a plan. People turn up expecting a free public garden to behave like a park, and are turned away at the desk.

Book the free timed ticket the moment you know your date: they are released weekly, up to three weeks out. At the time of writing the building has temporarily reduced visitor capacity for lift maintenance and is advising flexible visitors to rebook for a later date, so confirm before you build an evening around it.

What to do when the free tickets are gone

This is the part nobody tells you, and it is the most useful thing on this page.

Book a table instead. Sky Garden’s own position is that a restaurant booking includes complimentary access to the garden, even when the free tickets are sold out. So if the slot you wanted has gone, a drink or a meal upstairs gets you in at the hour you actually want, and you were going to spend money somewhere that evening anyway.

That reframes the whole thing. The free ticket is for people whose dates are flexible. The restaurant booking is for people whose dates are not.

Now put the hours against each other, because they are not the same and the gap is six hours.

What Monday to Friday Weekend and bank holidays
Free ticketed garden 10am to 6pm 11am to 9pm
The bars 8am to midnight 8am to 1am Friday and Saturday
Last entry to the building 11pm Sunday to Thursday Midnight Friday and Saturday

A free ticket on a Tuesday expires at six. A drink on the same Tuesday runs to midnight. Last orders are thirty minutes before the bars close, and on weekends when they run classes the building opens at half past seven in the morning.

So the free ticket is not only harder to get, it is the more restricted product. If what you want is London lit up rather than London in daylight, a free weekday ticket cannot give you that at all.

Where it is and how high

1 Sky Garden Walk, EC3M 8AF, at the top of 20 Fenchurch Street in the City, the building everyone calls the Walkie Talkie. Monument and Fenchurch Street are the nearest stations and both are a few minutes on foot.

The garden sits 35 floors above London across three levels, planted, under a curved glass roof, with bars and restaurants on the terraces. The view runs west over the river and the City.

On the dress code

Sky Garden now publishes a dress code, but it is for the restaurants and bars, not the free garden ticket. Its help centre says evening bookings from 6pm need a smart casual dress code at Darwin and the bars. Fenchurch Restaurant is stricter: no sportswear, hoodies or gym trainers. Flip flops, baseball caps and male vest tops are not permitted in the restaurants.

Can you wear jeans in the Sky Garden? For the free garden ticket, yes. It is a public space reached through an office building and people go up in whatever they were already wearing. Its plan your visit page carries no dress code for the free ticket, and the help centre’s dress code applies to the restaurants and bars. Rechecked on 2 October 2026.

The practical reading: the garden itself is a public space and people visit in ordinary clothes. The restaurants and bars up there are a separate proposition with the standards above. If you are booking a table rather than a free ticket, dress for the evening, and check with the restaurant directly if you are unsure.

How to do it well

Book the moment the window opens. Weekly release, three weeks out. Set a reminder rather than hoping.

Go at opening or late. It opens at 8am, which is the emptiest the garden ever is, and runs to midnight most nights and 1am on Friday and Saturday. The middle of a Saturday afternoon is the worst slot available to you.

It works in weather that ruins other viewpoints. It is glazed, so rain is not the problem it is on an open platform. Low cloud is still low cloud.

Do not pay for a comparable view nearby. Paid platforms in the City charge upwards of thirty pounds a head for roughly the same altitude. The free things guide covers the rest of what London gives away.

Everything here was taken from Sky Garden’s own published information in September 2026 and rechecked on 2 October 2026. Capacity, hours and booking windows change. Confirm before you travel.

Tower Bridge is the other free thing to watch on this stretch of river, and its lift schedule is published weeks ahead with the name of every ship.

St Paul’s Cathedral is the paid climb rather than the free lift, and it has a one pound ticket for visitors on Universal Credit, Pension Credit or ESA, which most visitors never find.

The London Eye is the paid version of a London view and costs 29 pounds online against nothing here, with a queue that can run 45 minutes past your slot.

Where to go next

The Garden at 120 is the free rooftop you can walk into without a ticket, fifteen floors up in the City.

The Shard is the direct comparison and the question search engines keep asking. Short answer: Sky Garden if you want it free or late, The Shard if you want height and open air.

The obvious comparison is eight minutes away. Horizon 22 is also free, sits higher at Level 58, and puts no time limit on your visit, which this one does not match. What Sky Garden has is the late licence: midnight most nights and one in the morning at weekends, against six in the evening across the road. Horizon 22 for the daytime view, Sky Garden for the evening. The best views in London ranks both against the free ones that need no ticket at all.

Free things to do in London covers the rest of what the city gives away, including the £27 cathedral ticket you do not have to buy.

Restaurants with a view covers where a view is worth paying for, and the rooftop bars cover the open air version.

Questions we get asked

Can you wear jeans in the Sky Garden?

For a free garden ticket, yes. Sky Garden is a public space reached through an office building and visitors go up in ordinary clothes. Rechecked on 2 October 2026: the plan your visit page carries no dress code. If you have booked a table at one of the restaurants or bars rather than a free ticket, the help centre asks for smart casual from 6pm, and no sportswear, hoodies or gym trainers at Fenchurch Restaurant.

What time does Sky Garden close?

The free ticketed garden runs 10am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 11am to 9pm at weekends and bank holidays. The bars stay open far later: 8am to midnight Sunday to Thursday and 8am to 1am on Friday and Saturday, with last orders thirty minutes before closing. Last entry to the building is 11pm Sunday to Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday. A free weekday ticket expires six hours before the bars do.

Is Sky Garden free?

Yes. Entry costs nothing, but it is ticketed: you book a free timed slot in advance rather than walking in. Tickets are released weekly, up to three weeks ahead of your visit, and they go quickly. Walk in entry depends on spare capacity on the day and is not something to plan around.

Is Sky Garden London free to visit?

It is, and it is the best free view in the city. The catch is the ticket rather than the price: free timed tickets are released on a weekly basis up to three weeks in advance. If they have gone for your date, a restaurant or bar booking upstairs includes garden access instead.

When are Sky Garden tickets released?

On a weekly basis, up to three weeks ahead of your visit, in Sky Garden's own words. Set a reminder for the window rather than checking hopefully, because the good evening slots go first. If you miss it, booking a table at one of the restaurants includes complimentary access to the garden even when the free tickets are sold out.

Can you just walk into Sky Garden?

Only if there is spare capacity, and you should not count on it. It is a free attraction but a ticketed one, with timed entry booked in advance. Arriving without a ticket and hoping is the commonest way a visit fails, because people assume a public garden works like a park.

Where is Sky Garden in London?

1 Sky Garden Walk, EC3M 8AF, at the top of 20 Fenchurch Street in the City, the building known as the Walkie Talkie. Monument and Fenchurch Street stations are both a few minutes away on foot. It opens 8am to midnight Monday to Thursday and Sunday, and to 1am on Friday and Saturday.

What is Sky Garden?

Three floors of planted public terrace 35 floors above London, under a curved glass roof, with bars and restaurants on the levels and a viewing deck that costs nothing to enter. It is the highest public garden in the city, and the free alternative to the paid viewing platforms nearby, which charge upwards of thirty pounds a head for a comparable height.

Is there a dress code at Sky Garden?

For the free garden ticket there is no dress code on the plan your visit page, and people visit in ordinary clothes. The restaurants and bars are different: the help centre asks for smart casual from 6pm at Darwin and the bars, and no sportswear, hoodies or gym trainers at Fenchurch Restaurant. Flip flops, baseball caps and male vest tops are not permitted in the restaurants.
