Two of you will pay more per person than three of you, and at a weekend you will pay a lot more. clueQuest charges 36.99 pounds a head at peak times for a team of three or more, and adds 10 pounds a person at weekends for a team of two. A pair at a Saturday slot pays 46.99 pounds each. The same slot with a third person costs 36.99 each.
That is the single most expensive thing most people get wrong about escape rooms in London, and it is in the operator’s own FAQ rather than anywhere near the booking button.
What an escape room costs
clueQuest publishes its prices in full, which is unusual in this category.
Off peak is 31.99 pounds a person. Peak is 36.99 pounds a person. Both are for teams of three or more.
A team of two pays 5 pounds more each on a weekday and 10 pounds more each at a weekend. Seasonal games can cost more again because they run for a limited time.
There is a related rule worth using. If you are not sure how many people are coming, book for three, because one, two or three players cost the same as three, then add people before or on the day. Extra players can be paid for in cash or card when you arrive.
There are no group discounts at the moment, which the FAQ states plainly.
Escape Hunt does not publish a price at all
The other large operator in London runs five venues in and around the city and shows no price on any of its venue pages. You get a figure once you have chosen a room, a date and a time.
That is the pattern across this whole category: the independents publish, the chains make you start booking first.
Where they are
clueQuest is at 169 to 171 Caledonian Road, N1 0SL, a short walk from King’s Cross. Missions run 60 minutes.
Escape Hunt’s two sites inside London proper are:
Oxford Street, in the basement and ground floor at 70 to 88 Oxford Street, W1D 1BP, directly opposite the Elizabeth line entrance at Tottenham Court Road. It is worth knowing that this venue sits inside a Boom Battle Bar, so you are booking a room within a larger games bar rather than a separate shopfront. Six games run here, including Doctor Who: A Dalek Awakens, which is only at this site.
Wandsworth, at Ram Quarter, 9 Barley Walk, SW18 1UL, eight minutes from Wandsworth Town, with five games.
The other three are Kingston, at Eden Walk, Watford, in the Harlequin centre, and Woking. All three are outside London proper, which matters if you are picking by travel time rather than by theme.
How many people a room actually takes
Maximums and minimums both bite, and they are per room rather than per venue.
At clueQuest, IAMAI takes up to 8 players and every other mission takes up to 6. Minimums vary by room: Operation BlackSheep needs at least three players, while PLAN52, Revenge of the Sheep and cQ Origenes will run with two.
So the room you want may be the reason a pair cannot book at all, separately from the price.
Every clueQuest mission is private. The venue never mixes players from different bookings, which is not true everywhere and is the reason a two person booking costs what it does: you are paying for the room, not the seat.
Children, and the policy that changed
This one costs money if you are working from an old guide. clueQuest’s former adults go free policy is no longer in place, and every member of a team now pays for admission.
For teams of children under 16 the venue requires one adult per team inside the room, so three teams of children need three adults, and each of those adults is now a paying player.
One room is adults only: Post Mortem, the venue’s first 18 and over horror mission.
HintHunt, the first one in the country, has closed
HintHunt London opened before any other escape room in the United Kingdom. Its website now carries a closing notice and nothing else, thanking past visitors and recommending clueQuest, which it describes as the longest standing escape room in the country, around the corner near King’s Cross.
Enquiries to the old HintHunt address now go to clueQuest’s email and telephone number. If you hold a HintHunt voucher, that is who to ask.
We have kept it on this page rather than deleting it, because it is the name in a decade of articles about London escape rooms and the answer people need is where it went.
How to choose
A pair: book off peak on a weekday, where the surcharge is 5 pounds each rather than 10, and pick a room that runs with two.
Three or more: off peak at 31.99 pounds a head is the cheapest published escape room price in central London.
With children: clueQuest, with one paying adult per team, and avoid Post Mortem, which is over 18 only.
Near Oxford Circus with something else to do afterwards: Escape Hunt Oxford Street, which is inside a games bar, accepting that you will not see a price until you start booking.
For the rest of the category, the activity bars cover what else is bookable by the hour and date ideas cover what a 60 minute room fits around.

Questions we get asked
How much is an escape room in London?
clueQuest near King's Cross is 31.99 pounds a person off peak and 36.99 at peak, for teams of three or more. A team of two pays 5 pounds more each on a weekday and 10 pounds more each at a weekend. Escape Hunt publishes no price on its venue pages.
Why do two people pay more for an escape room?
Because you are paying for a private room rather than a seat. clueQuest never mixes players from different bookings, so a team of two is charged 5 pounds more per person on weekdays and 10 pounds more at weekends. One, two or three players all pay the same three player total, so booking for three and adding people later is the cheaper route if numbers are uncertain.
How many people can do an escape room in London?
At clueQuest, IAMAI takes up to eight players and every other mission up to six. Minimums vary by room: Operation BlackSheep needs at least three, while PLAN52, Revenge of the Sheep and cQ Origenes will run with two.
Can children do escape rooms in London?
Yes, with a paying adult. clueQuest requires one adult per team inside the room for teams of children under 16, and its former adults go free policy has ended, so every member of a team pays. Post Mortem is its one over 18 room.
Is HintHunt London still open?
No. The first escape room in the United Kingdom has closed. Its website now carries only a closing notice recommending clueQuest near King's Cross, and enquiries including voucher questions go to clueQuest's email and telephone number.
Where are the Escape Hunt rooms in London?
Two are in London proper: Oxford Street, in the basement and ground floor at 70 to 88 Oxford Street, inside a Boom Battle Bar opposite the Elizabeth line entrance at Tottenham Court Road, and Wandsworth at Ram Quarter, 9 Barley Walk. The others, at Kingston, Watford and Woking, are outside London.
