Brick Lane is not one market, it is five, and they keep different hours. The Truman Brewery runs the Vintage Market, the Upmarket, the Backyard Market and the Tea Rooms, and two of them open only at the weekend. Turn up on a Tuesday expecting all of it and you will find three of the five.
The Truman Brewery is at 91 Brick Lane, London E1 6QL, and everything below is from its own markets page.
What is open every day
The Brick Lane Vintage Market is in F Block, 85 Brick Lane, and is open seven days a week. Monday to Friday 11am to 6.30pm, Saturday 11am to 6pm and Sunday 10am to 6pm. The brewery calls it the largest vintage market in the UK, with over 100 shops, running from 1920s glamour to Y2K streetwear.
The Upmarket at 83 Brick Lane, E1 6QR, is also open seven days: Monday to Saturday 11am to 6pm and Sunday 10am to 6pm. It is an international street food market with a retail section, so it works as lunch as well as shopping.
Ely’s Yard Food Trucks is open seven days a week, an outdoor area with traders including Cheese Wheel for fresh pasta, Texbbqz for smoked food and Mr. Sausage. The brewery pitches it as the stop after the shopping.
What is open at the weekend only
The Backyard Market in U Block, next to 146 Brick Lane, opens Saturdays 11am to 6pm and Sundays 10am to 6pm. It is independent stalls for fashion, jewellery and art, where the brewery says tomorrow’s big names get their start.
The Tea Rooms, next to 146 Brick Lane, open on the same weekend hours. They sell antiques, homeware, rare books, vinyl and retro furniture, and include Mada Mada, a French café serving homemade baked treats.
When to go
The week is the quiet version, and every day of it has the Vintage Market, the Upmarket and Ely’s Yard open. Sunday starts an hour earlier than the other days, at 10am, and Saturday and Sunday are the two days on which all five are trading. If you want the whole street, go on a weekend between 11am and 6pm.
Brick Lane sits between Shoreditch and Aldgate, so it pairs naturally with the restaurants in Shoreditch, and Spitalfields Market is a short walk away.
