The Best Restaurants in Notting Hill

Two of London's six three Michelin star restaurants are nine minutes apart here, and the market street is the weakest place to eat. Nine venues checked at source.

A calm modern restaurant interior with a counter, a pendant light and a laid table

The Notting Hill restaurants include two of London’s six three Michelin star restaurants, and they are a nine minute walk apart. No other part of the city outside Mayfair comes close, and almost nobody arriving for the market knows it.

That is the tension the neighbourhood runs on. Portobello Road brings several million visitors a year to a street of stalls, and the cooking that made the postcode serious is on the quiet roads either side of it: Ledbury Road, Kensington Park Road, Hillgate Street.

The rule here is the opposite of Soho’s: walk away from the crowd, not towards it.

One thing to strike off your list first

Hereford Road has closed. Their own site carries the notice: after seventeen years, it is finished. It appears on a great many Notting Hill and Bayswater lists that have not been rechecked, and several of them still describe the set lunch.

Hereford Road Closed

Address
Hereford Road, W2
Nearest
Bayswater or Westbourne Park
Hours
Closed permanently
Standing
Closed after seventeen years, by their own published notice

Their website now carries a single message thanking customers and staff after seventeen years. It is closed. If a guide is still recommending the set lunch here, that guide has not been rechecked in some time.

The two three star restaurants

These are the reason the postcode is on anyone’s list, and between them they are among the hardest tables in Britain.

Core by Clare Smyth, Kensington Park Road

Core by Clare Smyth

Address
Kensington Park Road, Notting Hill
Nearest
Ladbroke Grove or Notting Hill Gate
Standing
Three Michelin stars. Clare Smyth named World’s Best Female Chef by the World’s 50 Best

One of only six three star restaurants in the country's capital and the first run by a British woman to hold them. Book the moment the window opens rather than when you want to go: this is a diary exercise rather than a reservation.

The Ledbury, Ledbury Road

The Ledbury

Address
Ledbury Road, Notting Hill
Nearest
Westbourne Park or Notting Hill Gate
Standing
Three Michelin stars

Closed for three years and came back to a third star, which almost nothing in London has done. Same booking problem as Core and the same answer: put the release date in the diary rather than trying your luck.

The Notting Hill restaurants people actually want

Mazi, Hillgate Street

Modern Greek on a quiet street behind Notting Hill Gate, and the booking terms are unusually specific.

Mazi

Address
12 to 14 Hillgate Street, W8 7SR
Nearest
Notting Hill Gate
Booking
020 7229 3794. Tables are two hour slots unless you ask otherwise or there are more than six of you
Price
Reservations are cancelled automatically if you are more than 15 minutes late
Standing
Modern Greek

Three published rules worth knowing before you book: the table is yours for two hours unless you request longer or your party is more than six, cancellations need 24 hours, and arriving more than fifteen minutes late cancels the booking automatically. Few London restaurants print the last one.

Gold, Portobello Road

On Portobello Road itself, which usually means tourist infrastructure, and this is the exception. It also runs later than almost anything else in the postcode.

Gold

Address
95 to 97 Portobello Road, W11 2QB
Nearest
Ladbroke Grove or Notting Hill Gate
Hours
Monday to Thursday midday to 12.30am, Friday midday to 1am, Saturday 11.30am to 1am, Sunday 11.30am to 11.30pm
Booking
Reserving is recommended, but tables are always held back for walk ins
Standing
On Portobello Road, and open past midnight every night

Their own wording is that as a locally focused restaurant they always hold tables back for walk ins, which on Portobello Road is close to unheard of. It runs to one in the morning on a Friday and Saturday, making it the latest kitchen on this page by some distance.

Taq, Westbourne Grove

Taq

Address
141 to 145 Westbourne Grove, W11 2RS
Nearest
Notting Hill Gate or Bayswater
Hours
Closed Monday. Tuesday to Thursday 5pm to 10pm, Friday and Saturday midday to 11pm, Sunday midday to 10pm
Booking
Reservations taken online
Standing
Mexican, on Westbourne Grove

Shut on Mondays and no lunch at all until Friday, which is the thing to check before a midweek daytime plan. The weekend is the long version: midday to eleven on Friday and Saturday.

Granger and Co, Westbourne Grove

Granger and Co

Address
175 Westbourne Grove, W11 2SB
Nearest
Notting Hill Gate
Booking
Bookings from 5pm only, walk ins at any hour

The Australian breakfast that started the London queue

No reservations before 5pm, and it is the restaurant that taught London to queue for breakfast. Their own line is that they always have room for walk ins. Before nine on a weekday you walk in. At eleven on a Saturday you will wait.

Between meals

Two of the best reasons to be here are not restaurants. The Cow on Westbourne Park Road is a pub first, with Guinness and oysters at the front and a separate dining room upstairs, and the Electric Cinema on Portobello Road has double beds in its front row. The Notting Hill guide covers both, with the market days and the streets worth walking.

Practical notes

Walk away from Portobello Road. The market street is the busiest part of the neighbourhood and the weakest for eating, with one exception on this page. Ledbury Road, Kensington Park Road, Hillgate Street and Westbourne Grove all sit within ten minutes of it.

Saturday is the market and it changes everything. Portobello’s main market day brings the crowds and the queues, and a Saturday lunch booking anywhere near it wants making well ahead. Sunday and weekday mornings are a different neighbourhood entirely.

Three stations, and the right one is rarely Notting Hill Gate. Ladbroke Grove is closer to the north end of Portobello Road and to Gold. Westbourne Park serves The Ledbury and The Cow. Notting Hill Gate is the busiest and the furthest from most of this list.

Check Mondays. Taq is shut. Several others run reduced service. This is a residential neighbourhood and its restaurants keep residential hours.

Everything here was taken from each venue’s own published information in September 2026 and rechecked on 2 October 2026. Confirm before you travel, particularly anything you found on an older list.

Where to go next

The Kyoto Garden in Holland Park is the walk to take before or after, and dogs are not allowed in it.

Hillgate Street, three minutes from Notting Hill Gate, holds two Greek restaurants under the same ownership four doors apart. The Greek guide covers both, and their late arrival rules are not the same.

The full Notting Hill guide covers the market, the cinema and the streets. London’s Michelin starred restaurants covers the other four three star rooms.

Comparing neighbourhoods: Marylebone, Covent Garden, Canary Wharf and Shoreditch.

Questions we get asked

What are the best restaurants in Notting Hill?

Core by Clare Smyth and The Ledbury, which hold three Michelin stars each and are a nine minute walk apart, which no other London neighbourhood outside Mayfair can claim. For an ordinary evening rather than a diary exercise: Mazi on Hillgate Street for modern Greek, and Gold on Portobello Road, which holds tables back for walk ins and runs past midnight.

How many Michelin starred restaurants are in Notting Hill?

Two, and both hold the full three stars: Core by Clare Smyth on Kensington Park Road and The Ledbury on Ledbury Road. London has six three star restaurants in total, so a third of them are in this one postcode, within a few streets of each other and of the Portobello market.

Where can you eat near Portobello Market?

Gold at 95 to 97 Portobello Road is the exception to the rule about market street restaurants: it holds tables back for walk ins and stays open past midnight. Otherwise walk one street off. Westbourne Grove, Ledbury Road and Hillgate Street are all within ten minutes and none of them carries the market crowd.

Is Hereford Road still open?

No. Their own website carries a closing notice thanking customers and staff after seventeen years. It still appears on a number of Notting Hill and Bayswater restaurant lists, some of which still describe its set lunch, which is a fair measure of how often those lists are checked.

Do you need to book restaurants in Notting Hill?

For the two three star rooms, booking is a diary exercise rather than a phone call. For the rest, less than you would think: Gold always holds tables back for walk ins, and Granger and Co books only from 5pm and keeps room for walk ins. Mazi does take them, on two hour slots, and cancels automatically if you are more than fifteen minutes late.

What is the best station for Notting Hill restaurants?

Rarely Notting Hill Gate, despite the name. Ladbroke Grove is closer to the north end of Portobello Road and to Gold. Westbourne Park serves The Ledbury and The Cow better. Notting Hill Gate is the busiest of the three and the furthest from most of the eating.
