Chelsea, London: Royal Hospital Road, the King’s Road and What to Do

A quiet Chelsea restaurant interior with tables set before service

Chelsea is better supplied with things to do than its reputation as a shopping street suggests. Three of the best sit on one road running beside the river, two of them free. A contemporary art gallery is a few minutes from Sloane Square and open every day of the week. And the house of a Victorian writer opens one day a week, to anyone who booked.

It also has no Underground station on the King’s Road, which is the single fact that decides how a day here goes. Bluebird, at the centre of the street, publishes its own walking times: South Kensington fourteen minutes, Sloane Square twenty, Gloucester Road twenty. That is the restaurant being honest, and it applies to the whole road. Plan the way there before you plan anything else.

Royal Hospital Road, the street to walk first

Three of the best things to do in Chelsea are on one road by the Thames, and two of them cost nothing. Walk ten minutes south from Sloane Square and work west along it.

Royal Hospital Chelsea

Address
Royal Hospital Road, Chelsea
Nearest
Sloane Square, about ten minutes on foot
Hours
The free exhibition in the Soane Stable Yard is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 5pm, last admission 4.30pm
Price
The exhibition is free and needs no ticket. Guided tours led by a Chelsea Pensioner are 30 pounds for an adult, booked and paid for in advance
Standing
Home to veterans since 1692, and the grounds of the Chelsea Flower Show each May

Arrive at Chelsea Gate. The exhibition is the free way in and the tours are the reason to come back: in peak season they run twice a day from Tuesday to Sunday, at 10.30am and 2pm, for around ninety minutes, and off peak there is usually one a day. They will not hold a place without payment, so book before you travel.

The exhibition sits in a stable yard designed by Sir John Soane in 1814 to 1817 and tells the story of the Pensioners through the centuries. The tour takes you into the rest of it with somebody who lives there.

National Army Museum

Address
Royal Hospital Road, SW3 4HT
Nearest
Sloane Square, a ten minute walk
Hours
Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5.30pm. Closed Monday
Price
Free, for every gallery and the temporary exhibitions

Beside the Royal Hospital, so the two make one morning: the museum tells the army's story and the Pensioners next door lived it. Both are shut on a Monday.

Chelsea Physic Garden

Address
66 Royal Hospital Road, SW3 4HS
Nearest
Sloane Square, twelve minutes on foot. The 170 bus stops outside
Hours
Sunday to Friday, 11am to 5pm, last entry thirty minutes before closing. Closed Saturday
Price
Tickets from 5 to 15 pounds
Standing
Established in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London

Closed on Saturday, which is the day most visitors try. A walled garden of medicinal plants beside the river, and the reason to plan a Chelsea day for a weekday or a Sunday. Check the dates before a winter visit.

Restaurant Gordon Ramsay is a few doors along at number 68, which puts a free national museum, a seventeenth century garden and a three Michelin star dining room within a few minutes’ walk of each other on one street.

The gallery and the house

Saatchi Gallery

Address
Duke of York’s HQ, King’s Road, SW3 4RY
Nearest
Sloane Square, three or four minutes on foot
Hours
Monday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm
Price
Beyond the Streets, from 11 November 2026 to 5 May 2027, is a ticketed exhibition

The one thing in Chelsea open seven days a week and a short walk from the station, which makes it the natural start or finish to a King’s Road afternoon. Check what is showing before you go: the building is the constant and the exhibitions change.

Carlyle’s House

Address
24 Cheyne Row, SW3 5HL
Nearest
Sloane Square or South Kensington, both a walk
Hours
Wednesdays only, by pre-booked timed entry. Two weeks of tickets are released each Thursday
Price
Adults 12 pounds, children 6
Standing
The home of Thomas and Jane Carlyle, now run by the National Trust

One day a week, booked in advance and never on the door, so this is the Chelsea visit that needs the most planning. It is a street back from the river, a short walk west of the Physic Garden.

The King’s Road in Chelsea, and getting along it

The King’s Road is long. It runs from Sloane Square to the far end of SW10, and the walk from one end to the other is well over half an hour. The Saatchi Gallery sits at the Sloane Square end, Bluebird in the middle at number 350, and Medlar further west again at 438.

No station is close. Sloane Square serves the eastern end, South Kensington the middle, and Fulham Broadway the far west. All of them involve a walk, and a bus down the King’s Road is frequently faster than working out which one to use.

Where to eat

Chelsea’s restaurants have a guide of their own, built around the thing that matters most here: the clock and the calendar move the price more than the dish does.

Three facts to carry with you. Restaurant Gordon Ramsay holds three Michelin stars, the only three star room in the postcode. Medlar charges £57 for three courses at lunch and £83 at dinner, from the same kitchen. And Bluebird, in an Art Deco motor garage, serves until 1am on Friday and Saturday, long after the rest of the street has closed.

The Five Fields, which still appears on Chelsea lists, closed on 28 February 2025. The restaurants guide has the detail.

Practical notes

Pick the day before the place. The National Army Museum and the Royal Hospital’s exhibition both close on Monday, and the Physic Garden closes on Saturday. All three are open from Tuesday to Friday and on Sunday, and Wednesday is the only day Carlyle’s House can be added to them.

Two of the best things here are free. The National Army Museum charges nothing for any gallery, and the Royal Hospital’s exhibition needs no ticket. The Physic Garden, the Pensioner tours and Carlyle’s House are the ones to budget for.

Everything here was taken from the venues’ own published information and rechecked in full on 28 September 2026. Opening days, prices and exhibitions change. Confirm before travelling.

Where to go next

The art galleries guide covers the Saatchi, including the days it shuts entirely for installation.

The Chelsea restaurants guide covers where to eat here and when the price changes. London’s Michelin starred restaurants puts Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in the context of the rest, and the free museums guide has the others worth crossing town for.

For the neighbouring postcode and the opposite problem, where everything is walkable and nothing needs a bus, Knightsbridge is fifteen minutes north east. And our main London guide has the rest of a visit.

Questions we get asked

Is Chelsea west London?

Yes, and specifically south west. Chelsea sits in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea on the north bank of the Thames, west of Westminster and south of Knightsbridge and South Kensington. It is not north London and not south London: the river is its southern boundary, and Battersea on the far bank is the start of south London proper.

What part of London is Chelsea in?

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, in west London, running along the north bank of the Thames between Westminster and Fulham. The King's Road is its spine and runs the length of it. Sloane Square at the eastern end is the only proper Underground station it has, which is the fact that shapes every visit here.

What is there to do in Chelsea London?

More than its reputation suggests. Royal Hospital Road holds three of the best: the Royal Hospital, home of the Chelsea Pensioners, with a free exhibition and tours led by a Pensioner; the National Army Museum, which is free; and the Chelsea Physic Garden, established in 1673. The Saatchi Gallery is a few minutes from Sloane Square and open every day, and Carlyle's House on Cheyne Row opens on Wednesdays by booking. The King's Road and the river fill the rest of the day.

What is free to do in Chelsea?

The National Army Museum on Royal Hospital Road, free for every gallery and the temporary exhibitions, open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5.30pm. Next to it, the Royal Hospital's exhibition on the Chelsea Pensioners in the Soane Stable Yard, free with no ticket, Tuesday to Sunday from 9am to 5pm. Both close on Monday.

Is the Chelsea Physic Garden open on Saturday?

No. It opens Sunday to Friday, 11am to 5pm, with last entry thirty minutes before closing, and Saturday is the one day it stays shut. Tickets run from 5 to 15 pounds. It is at 66 Royal Hospital Road, twelve minutes on foot from Sloane Square, and the 170 bus stops outside.

Which Tube station is closest to the King's Road?

None of them are close, which is the thing to plan around. Bluebird publishes its own walking times from the middle of the street: South Kensington fourteen minutes, Sloane Square twenty, Gloucester Road twenty. Sloane Square serves the eastern end and Fulham Broadway the far west, and a bus along the King's Road is often faster than choosing between them.
