Mayfair Bars and Restaurants: Drink Where You Cannot Afford to Eat

Three of London's six three star restaurants are in Mayfair, and they book months out. The bars in the same buildings take walk ins. Where to go, and when.

London has six restaurants holding three Michelin stars. Three of them are in Mayfair: Hélène Darroze at The Connaught, Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester, and the Lecture Room and Library at Sketch. No other part of the city holds more than two.

That concentration is the reason people come, and it is also the reason Mayfair is easy to get wrong. The three star rooms book months out and cost what you would expect. The bars, which are the better proposition on most evenings, do not, and almost nobody plans an evening here around them.

Mayfair bars: where to drink

Connaught Bar

The Connaught, Carlos Place, Mayfair

Bond Street or Green Park
Hours

Go early. Their own policy is no reservations, which cuts both ways: nobody can book ahead of you, and nobody is holding a table either. It opens at four, and at six you will get a seat in a room that is impossible at nine. Nobody will ask whether you are staying.

The martini trolley is the thing it is known for, and it is worth ordering once for the performance as much as the drink. Our wider list of the best cocktail bars in London puts it first on the drink alone.

Mr Fogg's Residence

Address
15 Bruton Lane, Mayfair, W1J 6JD
Nearest
Green Park or Bond Street
Hours
Monday to Tuesday 5pm to 1am, Wednesday to Friday 5pm to 2am, Saturday 2pm to 2am, Sunday 5pm to 11pm
Booking

Two things are worth timing. There is a live DJ every Friday and Saturday from 10pm to 2am, which changes the room completely, and the Murder Mystery afternoons run select Saturdays from 1pm and need booking well ahead. Saturday is the only day it opens in the afternoon, and Sunday is the short one, finishing at eleven.

Theatrical, and good at it, which is a different thing from the bars that are only theatrical. Ours is a fuller account in the guide to London’s hidden bars, which separates the serious rooms from the costume.

The three star rooms

The full Mayfair restaurants guide covers nine of them, including the ones you can actually get a table at and what Scott’s publishes about its terrace.

The Lecture Room and Library holds three Michelin stars. The building also runs an annual art and design exhibition

Sketch is several rooms rather than one restaurant, and only the Lecture Room and Library carries the stars. It is also the one with the narrowest diary: four dinner nights and two lunches a week. Book it by name, or you will have booked afternoon tea in the Gallery, which is a completely different and much cheaper afternoon.

Hélène Darroze at The Connaught and Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester are the other two. Both book months rather than weeks ahead, both release on a schedule, and both are occasions rather than dinners. If you want one, start looking the moment you know your dates. The Gallery at Sketch, meanwhile, has been yellow since 2022 and is holding Camille Walala’s Static Arcade until 10 November 2026, so the pink room in the photograph no longer exists.

How the area actually works

The hotel bars are the way in. Mayfair’s restaurants are the hardest bookings in London and its bars are among the easiest, and they are in the same buildings. A drink at the Connaught costs a fraction of dinner at the Connaught and requires nothing but turning up early.

Book the room, not the building. This is the Sketch problem and it repeats across the postcode: the grand addresses contain several venues at several prices, and a booking made against the building’s name is not a booking in the room you read about.

Lunch, as everywhere at this end of London. The starred rooms are materially cheaper and easier at midday, and it is the same kitchen.

Green Park and Bond Street bracket it. Mayfair runs roughly from Regent Street to Park Lane and from Oxford Street to Piccadilly. Green Park serves the south, Bond Street the north, and everything between is walkable in under fifteen minutes.

Everything here was taken from the venues’ own published information and rechecked on 28 September 2026, and the star ratings from the guide’s own listing. Confirm before booking.

Your position is read in this browser, matched to the nearest neighbourhood we have written up, and sent nowhere.

The other districts covered here: Soho, Shoreditch, Notting Hill, Marylebone, Chelsea and Knightsbridge. Each is written the same way, on what the places themselves publish rather than on atmosphere.

The cigar terraces are the neighbouring postcodes rather than this one, in Belgravia, Knightsbridge, St James’s and Canary Wharf, and not one of them is the panelled room the phrase suggests.

Where to go next

Buckingham Palace is on the southern edge, and its page has the Changing the Guard days and what a tour costs.

London’s Michelin starred restaurants covers all 85 of them, and the best bars in London covers where to drink across the city.

The district also holds Savile Row, running parallel to Bond Street. Worth knowing before you plan the walk that it is a street of cutting rooms rather than shops: the oldest house has been there since 1806, and one of the best known shuts at five and does not open at weekends at all.

For the neighbouring postcode with an even higher concentration of five star hotels, Knightsbridge is ten minutes west. Soho is the same distance east and an entirely different evening. And our main London guide has the rest.

Questions we get asked

Where is Mayfair in London?

The West End, in the City of Westminster, bounded by Oxford Street to the north, Regent Street to the east, Piccadilly to the south and Park Lane and Hyde Park to the west. It is Zone 1, and Bond Street, Green Park, Marble Arch and Hyde Park Corner all sit on its edges rather than in the middle of it, so almost everywhere in Mayfair is a short walk from a station.

Is Mayfair west London?

It is the western half of the West End rather than west London proper. Mayfair is central: Zone 1, inside the City of Westminster, with Hyde Park on its western boundary. What people usually mean by west London, places like Notting Hill, Kensington and Chelsea, begins on the far side of the park.

What is there to do in Mayfair?

Eat, drink and look at things you are not going to buy. Three of London's six three Michelin star restaurants are here, more than any other district, and the hotel bars are the best in the city. Beyond that it is galleries, Savile Row and Bond Street, and the Royal Academy on Piccadilly. It is not a neighbourhood with sights so much as one with rooms.

Who lives in Mayfair?

Fewer people than you would think. Mayfair has one of the smallest residential populations of any central London district, because most of it is offices, embassies, hotels, galleries and shops. The housing that remains is among the most expensive in the world, and a good deal of it is owned rather than lived in.

How many three Michelin star restaurants are in Mayfair?

Three of London's six: Helene Darroze at The Connaught, Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester, and the Lecture Room and Library at Sketch. No other part of London holds more than two, which makes this the densest concentration of three star cooking in the country.

Can you go to a Mayfair hotel bar without staying there?

Yes, and it is the best value thing in the postcode. The bars at the Mayfair hotels serve the public, take walk ins and will not ask whether you have a room. The Connaught Bar goes further and takes no reservations at all, so arriving early is the only lever anyone has: it opens at four, and a seat at six is a seat in a room that is impossible at nine.

Do you need to book a bar in Mayfair?

Usually not, which is the opposite of the restaurants. The exceptions are the rooms that run an event: Mr Fogg's Residence has live DJs every Friday and Saturday from 10pm to 2am and Murder Mystery afternoons on select Saturdays, and both of those need booking ahead.

Is Sketch worth booking?

It depends entirely which part of it you book, because Sketch is several rooms at several prices in one building at 9 Conduit Street. Only the Lecture Room and Library holds the three stars, and it serves dinner Tuesday to Saturday and lunch on Friday and Saturday only. Book it by name, or you may find you have reserved afternoon tea in the Gallery instead.
