Everyman Cinema London: Thirty Minutes of Adverts, Published by Them

Their own figure, and up to 40 for special events. The 90 minute rule that stops members booking a double bill, the two ways out of the booking fee, and all thirteen London branches.

A dimly lit cinema with a blank screen, the half hour before the feature

Half an hour of adverts. Everyman publishes the number itself, and almost nobody reads it.

“We typically play up to 30 minutes worth of ads and trailers prior to each screening. For special events, this can vary between 15 and 40 minutes.”

So an eight o’clock film starts at half past eight. On a 40 minute special event it starts at twenty to nine. That is longer than most London cinemas and it is the single most useful thing to know before you book a table for afterwards.

There is exactly one way to avoid it, and it is not what you would guess. Relaxed screenings carry no trailers or advertisements at all, along with low lighting, reduced volume and freedom to move around. They are designed for guests on the autism spectrum, with sensory sensitivity, learning disabilities or other additional needs, and for the people with them.

The 90 minute rule members do not know about

Buried in the membership questions, and it quietly stops the thing members most want to do.

“Members cannot book for films starting 90 minutes before or after an already booked session.”

Everyman’s own example: book two tickets for a 6pm show and you can only book for films starting before 4.30pm or after 7.30pm that day.

Which means a membership cannot be used for a double bill. Two films back to back is exactly the pattern the rule exists to prevent, and nothing on the membership sales page mentions it.

The £2.50 fee is per transaction, and two ways out of it

A £2.50 Remote Booking Fee is charged per transaction for online or phone bookings, regardless of payment method.

Two things to take from that. It is per transaction, not per ticket, so one booking of six costs £2.50 and six bookings of one cost £15. Nominate someone to book.

And there are two ways to avoid it entirely: buy in person at the cinema, or be a member. Members are exempt, but only if they are logged into their membership account when booking, which is the step people miss.

Babies go free before five, and are banned after it

A clean rule with a hard edge, and more generous than most people expect at one end.

Babies under 12 months are welcome at any U or PG film before 5pm, seven days a week, free of charge.

“After 5pm, babies are not permitted in any of our screenings.”

Not in a U, not in a PG, not anywhere. So the window is the afternoon, and it closes absolutely.

Everyman warns that sound levels may not suit a baby’s developing ears at a regular screening, and that you may be asked to leave if the baby disturbs other guests. Which is what Baby Club is for: under-12-months screenings with the volume turned down, soft lighting, and a hot drink and a slice of cake or small popcorn included in the ticket.

Toddler Club covers ages 1 to 5, with reduced sound and dimmed lighting, and the detail worth noting is that each ticket counts as two, one for you and one for the child, with the drink and cake included again.

A two year old can come to Baby Club if the certificate is U, PG or 12A, but only if an actual baby of 0 to 12 months is present and a child ticket is bought for the older one.

No under-age entry to a 15 or 18, even with a parent

Stated flatly, and worth knowing because some chains are softer about it.

“To attend films rated 15 or 18, guests must meet the age requirement, even if accompanied by an adult.”

Challenge applies to anyone who looks younger. Accepted ID: a passport or a photocopy of one, a student ID, or a provisional or full driving licence.

Note that Everyman accepts a photocopy of a passport, which is unusually relaxed, and that a student ID counts, which many venues do not allow.

Silver Screen includes cake if you are 55

Weekly matinee screenings for guests aged 55 and over, with a complimentary hot drink and a slice of cake in the ticket price.

The useful part: under-55s are welcome to attend, but the refreshments are not included in the standard ticket. So anyone can get the matinee; only the over-55s get the cake.

Separately, off-peak concessions run for students in full-time education with a dated student ID, and for guests aged 60 and over, on selected showings, excluding bank and public holidays.

The sofas do not recline, anywhere

Asked often enough that it has its own question, and the answer is short.

“Our sofas are fixed seating. Recliner sofas are not available at any of our venues.”

What you do get varies by room. Standard is classic cinema seating. Premier is luxury armchairs and sofas with more space. Gallery seats sit on a mezzanine. And Club Suites, two-seat sofa booths with personal footstools on each aisle, exist only at Everyman Hampstead.

Food comes to the seat, until it does not

All Everyman cinemas have a full bar and restaurant menu, served in the bar or delivered to your seat.

The timing rule is the thing to plan around. Orders placed before the film begins are delivered to seats. Orders placed after it starts must be collected outside the screen. Last orders for in-screen delivery vary by venue and film.

So order in the first half hour of adverts, not in the opening scene. Three ways to order: a team member at your seat, the QR code on your table, or the food link in your booking confirmation, which attaches the order to your seat and applies any member discount automatically.

No outside food or drink. Members get 10 per cent off food and drink at all venues.

Thirteen cinemas in London

Everyman runs over 45 sites nationally. The London ones, with addresses:

Hampstead, 5 Holly Bush Vale NW3 6TX. The one with Club Suites.

Baker Street, 96 to 98 Baker Street W1U 6TJ.

King’s Cross, 14 to 18 Handyside Street N1C 4DN.

Screen on the Green, 83 Upper Street N1 0NP.

Broadgate, 1 Finsbury Avenue EC2M 2PF.

Canary Wharf, Crossrail Place Level Minus Two E14 5AR.

Chelsea, 279 King’s Road SW3 5EW.

Borough Yards, 3 Dirty Lane SE1 9PA.

Belsize Park, 203 Haverstock Hill NW3 4QG.

Maida Vale, 215 Sutherland Avenue W9 1RU.

Muswell Hill, Fortis Green Road N10 3HP.

Crystal Palace, 25 Church Road SE19 2TE.

Barnet, Great North Road EN5 1AB.

One access warning Everyman publishes itself: at Muswell Hill, Screens 4 and 5 are on the top floor with no lift access. Other venues have their own restrictions listed on their individual pages.

CEA Carer Cards are accepted, with the disabled guest paying normal admission and the carer admitted free, unless the card specifies two admissions. CEA bookings can be made online, at the box office or by calling 01727 222 323.

Family Film Club is not in most of London

Worth checking before you plan a half term around it.

Family Film Club runs during school holidays at off-peak times, and of the London venues only Barnet, Crystal Palace and Muswell Hill are on the list. The rest are outside London entirely.

Where it runs the value is real: child tickets are 50 per cent off with no limit on how many children get the discount, and adult and concession tickets are also reduced. It is for ages 5 to 14.

A family ticket, available on selected screenings, covers two adults over 18 and two children up to 14.

Three membership tiers, and what separates them

Everyman and Everyicon members get 2-for-1 Monday to Thursday, excluding bank holidays, special events and Baby Club. A free guest four days a week is the headline benefit.

Everywhere members get 25 per cent off all live and satellite broadcasts, including MET Opera Live, NT Live, RSC and ROH, which the other tiers do not.

The ticket limits differ sharply. Everyman members can use 6 tickets in one go. Everyicon members can redeem up to 4 per session. Everywhere members can redeem up to 2 per session. Everywhere and Everyicon can hold up to 8 booked in advance.

Free tickets work at any venue for regular screenings, but not for special events such as ROH or NT Live, and not for child tickets.

What happens to unused tickets

The rollover rule has a 30 day tail that is easy to fall off.

Unused tickets roll over if you renew before expiry or within 30 days.

If you do not renew, or you switch tier, the tickets expire and cannot be carried over or exchanged for cash.

Note the tier trap: moving from Everyman to Everywhere, or the other way, loses whatever you had banked.

Members’ free tickets are non-refundable, but a pre-booked ticket can be swapped for another performance with at least 90 minutes notice in person, by the contact form or by phone. If Everyman cancels, the tickets are credited back.

Memberships run 12 months. You can cancel within 14 days; after 15 days the 12 month agreement stands and there are no pro-rata refunds. Automatic renewal is flagged by email a month before expiry.

Cards cannot be lent. The named member must be present, sharing is prohibited and may cause suspension, and photo ID checks are carried out at all venues.

Other things worth knowing

All ticket bookings are non-refundable. Amendments may be possible subject to availability with at least 24 hours notice through the online contact form.

The film programme is confirmed weekly, so check listings on Tuesday mornings. Bigger blockbusters may go on sale earlier, and no run length can be guaranteed.

3D screenings carry a surcharge.

An e-ticket on a phone or printed is enough; you do not need the card you booked with.

How to plan it

Allow 30 minutes of adverts. Book dinner accordingly, and up to 40 for special events.

Want no adverts: a relaxed screening, which runs none at all.

Booking for a group: one transaction. The £2.50 fee is per booking, not per ticket, and in-person and members pay nothing.

Member planning a double bill: you cannot. No second booking within 90 minutes either side.

Bringing a baby: before 5pm, U or PG, free. After 5pm, no babies anywhere.

Over 55: Silver Screen matinees include a drink and cake.

Ordering food to your seat: do it during the adverts. After the film starts you collect it outside.

Where to go next

The Prince Charles Cinema and BFI IMAX are the other two London cinema memberships worth the arithmetic.

Hampstead, Chelsea and Canary Wharf cover the areas around the branches, and Borough covers the Borough Yards estate.

Questions we get asked

How long are the adverts at Everyman?

Up to 30 minutes of ads and trailers before each screening, and between 15 and 40 minutes for special events depending on the type of event. Everyman publishes this itself. Relaxed screenings are the exception and carry no trailers or advertisements at all.

How do you avoid the Everyman booking fee?

Buy your tickets in person at the cinema, or be a member. The £2.50 Remote Booking Fee applies to online and phone bookings regardless of payment method, but it is charged per transaction rather than per ticket, so one booking for six people costs £2.50. Members must be logged into their account for the exemption to apply.

Can Everyman members book two films in a row?

No. Members cannot book for films starting 90 minutes before or after a session they have already booked. Everyman's own example: with 2 tickets booked for a 6pm show, you can only book films starting before 4.30pm or after 7.30pm that day. A membership therefore cannot be used for a double bill.

Can you take a baby to Everyman?

Before 5pm, yes. Babies under 12 months are welcome at any U or PG film before 5pm, seven days a week, free of charge. After 5pm babies are not permitted in any screening at all. Baby Club screenings, for under 12 months, have reduced volume and soft lighting and include a hot drink and cake or small popcorn.

Do Everyman sofas recline?

No. Everyman states that its sofas are fixed seating and that recliner sofas are not available at any of its venues. Seat types are Standard, Premier armchairs and sofas, Gallery seats on a mezzanine, and Club Suites, which are two-seat sofa booths with footstools and exist only at Everyman Hampstead.

How many Everyman cinemas are in London?

Thirteen: Hampstead, Baker Street, King's Cross, Screen on the Green on Upper Street, Broadgate, Canary Wharf, Chelsea, Borough Yards, Belsize Park, Maida Vale, Muswell Hill, Crystal Palace and Barnet. The group runs over 45 nationally.

What is the difference between the Everyman membership tiers?

Everyman and Everyicon members get 2-for-1 Monday to Thursday, excluding bank holidays, special events and Baby Club, which Everywhere does not. Everywhere members get 25% off live and satellite broadcasts such as NT Live and ROH. Ticket limits differ too: Everyman can use 6 tickets at once, Everyicon up to 4 per session and Everywhere up to 2.

Do unused Everyman member tickets expire?

They roll over if you renew before expiry or within 30 days. If you do not renew, or you switch to a different membership tier, the tickets expire and cannot be carried over or exchanged for cash. Switching tier loses whatever you had banked.

Can an adult take a child to a 15 rated film at Everyman?

No. Everyman requires guests to meet the age requirement for 15 and 18 rated films even when accompanied by an adult. Accepted proof of age is a passport or a photocopy of one, a student ID, or a provisional or full driving licence.
