The Ivy Chelsea Garden, on the King’s Road, is currently serving two courses for £19.96. The price is the joke: the menu marks thirty years of Cool Britannia and is priced at the year. It runs daily and it ends on 3 November.
Which is the argument of this page in one line. A romantic restaurant is not the same as an expensive one, and the mistake most people make is booking the latter and hoping. What actually matters is the room: the lighting, the noise, the space between tables, and whether the service leaves you alone.
These are the London rooms that get it right, sorted by what kind of evening you are having, with the addresses and the opening days each one publishes. The opening days matter more than you would think, and they are where this page previously let people down.
The ones with a genuine claim to the title
Clos Maggiore, Covent Garden
33 King Street, Covent Garden, WC2E 8JD. Routinely called the most romantic restaurant in London, and for once the consensus is right. The blossom-adorned conservatory at the back is the reason to come, and the restaurant describes it as an al fresco room during the summer months. It is theatrical in a way that should feel forced and somehow does not.
It holds three AA Rosettes, current to 2026. The one worth knowing about is the other award: a Wine Spectator Grand Award, 2025, which is given to only about a hundred wine lists in the world, plus the AA Notable Wine List award. Architectural Digest has called it one of the most romantic restaurants in the world and Harden’s lists it among London’s most romantic. If the wine matters as much as the room, this is the strongest list on this page by a distance.
The critical detail: request the conservatory when you book. The front rooms are perfectly nice and entirely beside the point. There is also an elegant first floor private dining room if the evening is a larger occasion.
Bouchon Racine, Farringdon
66 Cowcross Street, EC1M 6BP, above the Three Compasses, and its own site now presents the two together as a pub and bouchon. A French bistro over a pub sounds unpromising and is the opposite: warm, low-lit, properly cooked, and without a trace of the self-consciousness that usually comes with the label.
It is the room on this page that feels least like it is trying, which is why it works. Two minutes from Farringdon station, so it is also the easiest to get home from. The bouchon opens Tuesday to Saturday only, while the pub downstairs trades Monday to Saturday.
Balthazar, Covent Garden
Red leather booths, mirrored walls, mosaic floor and low light. A large, glamorous, busy room rather than an intimate one, which makes it the better choice when a bit of energy helps and silence would not.
For a first evening
The requirements are different here. You want somewhere with a natural end point, enough noise that a pause is not deafening, and no three hour tasting menu locking you in.
A bistro over a tasting menu, always. Counter or bar seating is underrated for a first date: you sit side by side rather than across, there is a kitchen to watch, and leaving after ninety minutes is not a statement.
Our guide to things to do in London for couples covers the alternatives to dinner altogether, which for a first evening is often the better call.
For an anniversary
This is when the expensive room earns its money, but the room still matters more than the star count.
The Ivy Chelsea Garden, 197 King’s Road, SW3 5EQ. The private dining room overlooks the garden and the al fresco spaces are the draw. It also keeps the longest hours of anything on this page: 08:30 to 23:30 Monday to Thursday, 08:30 to midnight on Friday and Saturday, and 09:00 to 23:30 on Sunday, so it is one of the few rooms here that will seat you at nine on a Sunday. The main restaurant, terrace and bathroom are all fully accessible. And the two course Cool Britannia menu at £19.96 runs daily until 3 November, which makes an anniversary dinner there cost less than lunch elsewhere.
Gauthier Soho, 21 Romilly Street, W1D 5AF, is entirely vegan and far plusher than that description suggests, in a Georgian townhouse over several floors. Read its hours before you plan anything around it: dinner is Tuesday to Thursday 5pm to 10pm and Friday to Saturday 5pm to 10:30pm, lunch is Saturday at 1pm only, and it is closed on Sunday and Monday. A vegan tasting menu in Soho is a fine anniversary. Turning up on the anniversary itself and finding it dark is not.
If you want the full occasion, London’s Michelin starred restaurants covers the top tier and how to actually get a table in one.
The things that actually make a room romantic
Lighting, above everything. Candles or low warm light. Overhead spots kill an evening faster than bad food.
Noise at the right level. Silence is worse than a hum. You want enough background that a lull is comfortable.
Table spacing. If you can hear the next table’s conversation, they can hear yours.
Service that disappears. The best rooms for this are attentive and invisible. Anywhere that explains every plate at length is optimising for the wrong thing.
Not too large. Under sixty covers is the sweet spot. Cavernous rooms are for groups.
Booking notes
Check the closing days before you choose the date. This is the one that ruins evenings. Gauthier Soho is closed Sunday and Monday and serves lunch on a Saturday only, and Bouchon Racine shuts on the same two days. The Ivy Chelsea Garden is open every day from half past eight in the morning. Those two are at opposite ends of the same city and the same price bracket.
Ask for the specific table. The conservatory at Clos Maggiore, the garden room at the Ivy Chelsea Garden, a booth at Balthazar. These are the reason to go and they are allocated in advance, not on arrival.
Book early in the week if you can. A Tuesday in any of these rooms is a calmer, better evening than a Saturday in the same seat.
Mention the occasion. Every restaurant on this list will do something small if told in advance. None of them will if told at the table.
Do not book 8pm on a Saturday and expect intimacy. The room is not the problem, the hour is.
For a drink beforehand, the “impress someone” section of our best bars guide exists for exactly this. The best restaurants in London covers dining more broadly, and our main London guide has the rest of the evening.
Addresses, opening hours, awards and prices above were taken from each restaurant’s own published pages and rechecked on 28 September 2026. The £19.96 menu is a limited run ending 3 November and will be gone after that. Two claims previously on this page, an award attribution and a wood-burning fire, have been removed because neither appears on the restaurant’s own pages.
London date ideas covers the rest of the evening, and is deliberately short where most such lists run to seventy one items.
Questions we get asked
What makes a restaurant romantic rather than just expensive?
The room and the hour, not the bill. A romantic restaurant is not the same as an expensive one, and the mistake most people make is booking the latter and hoping. Look for a room that is quiet enough to talk in and a table that is not in the middle of it, which is a different search from looking for the best food.
What time should you book a romantic dinner in London?
Not 8pm on a Saturday, which is the busiest, loudest and least intimate slot in the week. An earlier weeknight table in the same restaurant is a completely different evening in the same room. If the date is the point rather than the occasion, move the night before you move the restaurant.
Can you request a particular table in London restaurants?
Yes, and at some rooms it is the whole difference. Where a restaurant has a conservatory, a corner or a separate section, request it when you book rather than on arrival, because by then the table has already been assigned. At Clos Maggiore the blossom conservatory is the entire reason to go and the front rooms are beside the point. It costs nothing to ask and it is the single most effective thing you can do for an evening like this.
What is the most romantic restaurant in London?
Clos Maggiore at 33 King Street in Covent Garden has the strongest claim, and unusually it is backed by things you can check: three AA Rosettes current to 2026, a Wine Spectator Grand Award for 2025, which fewer than a hundred wine lists in the world hold, and the AA Notable Wine List award. Architectural Digest has called it one of the most romantic restaurants in the world. Book the blossom conservatory rather than the front rooms.
Is there a cheap romantic restaurant in London?
The Ivy Chelsea Garden at 197 King’s Road is running a two course Cool Britannia menu at 19.96 pounds, priced as a joke about the year, daily until 3 November. It opens at 08:30, or 09:00 on a Sunday, and runs to 23:30, or midnight on Friday and Saturday. Beyond a limited-run menu like that, the honest answer is that the room matters more than the bill: an early weeknight table in a good room beats eight o’clock on a Saturday in a better one.
Which romantic restaurants in London are closed on Sunday?
Gauthier Soho, the vegan restaurant at 21 Romilly Street, is closed on Sunday and Monday, serves dinner from 5pm Tuesday to Saturday, and does lunch on Saturday at 1pm only. Bouchon Racine in Farringdon keeps the same two days shut. That is the trap on this page, because Sunday is exactly when people book an occasion. The Ivy Chelsea Garden opens at 09:00 on a Sunday and serves until 23:30, so it is the reliable Sunday answer.
