Matilda’s own age answer contains three different numbers, and only one of them is a rule.
The guidance is 6 and over. The hard ban is 4 and over. And children under 4, including babes in arms, are welcome at the relaxed performances.
So the production says it is not suitable under 6, will not admit under 4s to a normal performance, and will admit a baby to a relaxed one. If you are bringing a four or five year old, the door will let you in and the show is telling you not to.
Children must occupy their own seats at all times, so there is no lap option at any age.
Latex balloons, lasers, and actors in the audience
The effects list is longer than most and two items on it matter practically rather than dramatically.
Latex balloons are popped onstage. Which is worth knowing if anyone in your party has a latex allergy, and no other big musical publishes anything comparable.
Actors interact in audience spaces throughout the performance. So an aisle seat is not a quiet seat, and a child who dislikes being approached should not be on the end of a row.
Also: flashing lights, lasers, loud sound effects and stage haze. Bag searches operate on arrival.
You can book almost two years out
Now booking to September 2027.
That is the longest horizon of any big London musical. Moulin Rouge keeps only about six months on sale, Hamilton reaches March 2027, and Mamma Mia says October 2027 in one place and March in another.
Save up to 20% on off-peak performances from January, which is the published discount and applies to booking ahead rather than to any day-seat scramble.
The show is marking 15 years in the West End.
The matinees that are not at half past two
Extra performances are added in peak weeks and the school holidays, and they run at 2pm rather than the usual 2.30pm.
Published additional matinees include Thursday 29 October 2026 at 2pm, Thursday 17 December 2026 at 2pm, and Tuesday 22 December 2026 at 2pm, with more through the Christmas period.
Half an hour earlier than you would assume is exactly the kind of detail that turns a relaxed lunch into a sprint, so check the time on the ticket rather than the time in your head.
The box office opens on Sunday
A small advantage that no other show in this group offers.
The official box office is open 12pm to 7pm Monday to Saturday, and 12pm to 3pm on Sundays.
Compare that with the Delfont Mackintosh Central Box Office, which covers eight theatres but closes on Sunday, and the Apollo Victoria, which closes on Monday. If you want to buy a West End ticket in person on a Sunday afternoon, Seven Dials is where you go.
Running time and arrival
2 hours 35 minutes including one interval.
That matches Mamma Mia exactly and sits between The Lion King’s 2h30 and the 2h45 group.
They recommend arriving no less than 15 minutes before the performance begins, which is the most relaxed arrival advice of any big musical. Moulin Rouge asks for 30 minutes and Wicked opens its auditorium 55 minutes ahead.
Where it is
Cambridge Theatre, Seven Dials, Earlham Street, London WC2H 9HU.
Leicester Square on the Northern and Piccadilly lines, Covent Garden on the Piccadilly, and Tottenham Court Road on the Central, Northern and Elizabeth lines are all a short walk, with Charing Cross for mainline services.
Buses 8, 24, 26, 29 and 38.
Being on the Elizabeth line via Tottenham Court Road makes this the easiest of the big musicals to reach from Heathrow or the east.
Relaxed and assisted performances
Relaxed performances run, and they are the route in for children under 4 and babes in arms. There is a separate assisted performances programme for access requirements.
Programmes can be bought at the theatre or online in advance.
There is also a UK and Ireland tour visiting Norwich, Dublin, Milton Keynes, Glasgow and Cardiff, which is a separate booking from the London run.
How to plan it
With a child under 6: book a relaxed performance, which is the only route for under 4s and the better fit below 6.
Latex allergy in the party: balloons are popped onstage.
An anxious child: avoid the aisle, because actors work in the audience.
Booking far ahead: to September 2027, with up to 20% off off-peak dates from January.
Holiday matinees: check for 2pm, not 2.30pm.
Buying in person on a Sunday: here, midday to 3pm.

How to get in
The age answer gives three numbers: guidance is 6 and over, under 4s are barred from normal performances, and under 4s including babes in arms are welcome at relaxed performances. Latex balloons are popped onstage and actors work in audience spaces. Holiday matinees start at 2pm, half an hour earlier than usual.
Where to go next
The Lion King is the other family option, recommended from 6 with a £29.50 Monday release.
The Book of Mormon is the opposite end at 14 and over, and the West End page covers the rest.
