Moco charges about fifteen pounds in a city where the British Museum, the Tate galleries and the National Gallery are free. That is the question to settle before you book, and the answer depends entirely on whether you want to see Banksy, because the free collections do not have him.
The second thing to settle is which ticket, because there are three and the gap between the cheapest and the dearest is twelve pounds.
What the tickets cost
Every price is lower booked online than on the door, and the museum says booking ahead saves up to five pounds a ticket.
General Admission is 14.90 pounds online, from 16.90. It covers all the current exhibitions. The Flex ticket is 21.90 online, from 23.90, and the only thing it adds is the right to turn up at any time during opening hours rather than at a booked slot. The VIP ticket is 26.90 online, from 28.90, and adds a poster from the gift shop to the same flexibility.
So the flexibility costs seven pounds and the poster costs another five. Children under four go free.
If you know when you are going, the General Admission ticket is the one. The Flex ticket is for a day with a loose plan, and at 21.90 it is approaching the price of two general tickets.
Opening hours
Monday to Thursday 10am to 5pm, Friday and Saturday 10am to 6pm, Sunday 10am to 5pm. The museum says to allow 90 to 120 minutes, so a five o’clock close means arriving by three.
It is at 1 to 4 Marble Arch, London W1H 7EJ, which puts it at the top of Park Lane and the west end of Oxford Street.
Bring headphones
The audio tour is free and you have to bring your own headphones. That is on the museum’s own practical information, and it is the detail that will otherwise cost you the commentary on a collection built around artists whose work carries an argument.
What is actually in it
Over 100 modern, contemporary, digital and immersive works. The names the museum leads with are Banksy, Basquiat, Warhol, Kusama, Haring and Hirst, with a permanent Banksy exhibition as part of its Contemporary Masters, and a digital and immersive section including Six N. Five and Pulse Interactive. It also shows work by Robbie Williams.
Moco is independent and came to London after nine years and six million visitors in Amsterdam and Barcelona. It is air conditioned, which matters more than it sounds in a building that busy in July.
Is it worth it
If you want to see Banksy and Kusama in one room, yes, because nowhere free in London offers that. If what you want is modern and contemporary art broadly, Tate Modern is free and very much larger, and the ticketed shows across the city are frequently better value for a serious exhibition.
The clearest way to think about it: this is a collection of famous names arranged to be enjoyed and photographed in two hours, priced accordingly. It is not pretending to be the Tate and the Tate is not pretending to be this.
Marble Arch puts it next to Oxford Street and Hyde Park, and the Marylebone restaurants are the nearest good lunch.
