Saatchi Gallery: Free Right Now, and the Closures to Check

Both current exhibitions are free until 11 October. But the whole building shuts for days between shows, and its own closures list is out of date.

The gallery is shut today. Saatchi closes the whole building between shows, and its own notice has it closed from Monday 12 to Thursday 15 October 2026, reopening on Friday 16 October at 1pm.

The free run has just ended. Winsor & Newton Art Mail and ArtEvol 2026 both closed on 11 October, and with them the window in which Saatchi was free with no booking.

What comes next is ticketed. BEYOND THE STREETS runs from 11 November 2026 to 5 May 2027 across Galleries 4 to 14, bringing together over 100 international creators across more than ten rooms, with new, historic and previously unseen work from international street culture. It is booked in advance.

The reopening hours, day by day

The gallery publishes this stretch explicitly rather than as a standing timetable, which is why the usual 10am to 6pm line is no help this month:

Closed Monday 12 to Thursday 15 October. Friday 16 October, 1pm to 6pm. Saturday 17 October, 11am to 6pm. Sunday 18 October, 11am to 5pm. Closed Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 October. Wednesday 21 October onwards, 10am to 6pm.

Between 16 and 18 October the building is open on shortened hours with no major exhibition in place, so check what is actually hanging before making the trip.

It shuts the whole building between shows

This is the thing to check before you travel, and it is unlike any national museum.

Saatchi closes the entire gallery to the general public for exhibition installation, for several days at a time, several times a month.

Their own published list of recent closures: 13 to 17 September, 20 to 23 September, and 28 to 30 September. Three separate multi-day shutdowns inside one month.

The Tates and the national galleries close individual rooms. Saatchi closes the front door.

And the stated hours are not reliable

The published regular hours are Monday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm. Their own notices show that is a guideline rather than a rule.

A recent visitor-hours notice recorded Saturday 26 September open 11am to 7pm, Sunday 27 September open 11am to 5pm, then closed for three days, then 10am to 6pm from 1 October onwards.

So on one weekend the gallery opened an hour late and closed an hour late on the Saturday, and shut an hour early on the Sunday. None of that matches the stated 10 to 6.

One honest note on their website

Checked on 6 October 2026, and worth knowing because it affects whether you can trust what you read there.

The closure list is headed “Upcoming Gallery Closure Dates” but every date on it is in September and has already passed. So it tells you nothing about October.

Two links in their own navigation return a 404 error: the Ticket Info page and the FAQs page.

The what’s-on page works and is accurate, so that is the one to trust. For anything about prices or closures, telephone before you travel.

Buggies are welcome, which is rare

Most London galleries either ban pushchairs or make you leave them. Saatchi’s published position is the opposite and unusually warm.

Regular-sized buggies and pushchairs are welcome in all exhibition spaces, even during busy periods.

They reserve the right to introduce limits for safety if the galleries are extremely busy with an unusually high number of buggies, in which case some may be asked to use a buggy park inside. But the default is yes.

Against the Royal Opera House, which cannot store a pushchair at all, this is the family-friendliest art venue in central London.

Access, and the two parking bays

Assisted or ramp access at the main entrance. Lifts to all floors. Level access between the galleries on each floor.

Wheelchairs are available on request.

There are two blue badge parking bays at the rear of the gallery, reached via Turk’s Row off Lower Sloane Street. Booking well in advance is described as essential, and both the bays and a wheelchair are reserved through admin@saatchigallery.com or 020 7811 3070.

Two bays is very few, which is exactly why they say to book early.

Where it is, and how to find it

Saatchi Gallery, Duke of York’s HQ, King’s Road, London SW3 4RY.

The gallery’s own directions are worth following because it is easy to walk past: about 300 yards along the King’s Road from Sloane Square, set back from the road on the left, as part of the Duke of York’s Square complex.

Sloane Square is a 3 to 4 minute walk on the District and Circle lines. Victoria is 20 to 25 minutes on foot and is the nearest mainline station.

Buses 11, 19, 22, 49, 211 and 319 on the King’s Road, and 11, 137 and 211 on Lower Sloane Street.

What it is

A contemporary art gallery since 1985, built on Charles Saatchi’s collection, with a reputation for showing artists before they became well known.

It became a registered charity in 2019, which is the change behind the free shows: its stated mission is now to make contemporary art accessible to all.

How to plan it

From 11 November: BEYOND THE STREETS, ticketed, booked ahead. Before that, check what is hanging rather than assuming anything is.

Always telephone or check the what’s-on page first, because the whole building closes for installations and the closures list is out of date.

Do not trust the 10am to 6pm hours without checking the day you are going.

With a pushchair: welcome, in all the galleries.

Needing a blue badge bay: book it, well ahead. There are only two.

Finding it: 300 yards up the King’s Road from Sloane Square, set back on the left.

Where to go next

The art galleries page covers the commercial rooms, and Tate Modern is the free contemporary collection that never closes its front door.

Chelsea restaurants cover lunch on the King’s Road, and the free museums cover what is reliably free.

Questions we get asked

Is the Saatchi Gallery free?

Not at present. The free run of Winsor & Newton Art Mail and ArtEvol 2026 ended on 11 October 2026, and the next major show, BEYOND THE STREETS from 11 November 2026 to 5 May 2027, is ticketed and booked in advance. Saatchi is free only when a particular exhibition is, so check before travelling.

What are the Saatchi Gallery opening times?

Published as Monday to Sunday 10am to 6pm, but treat that as a guide. The gallery's own notices have recorded an 11am to 7pm Saturday and an 11am to 5pm Sunday, and it closes the entire building for several days at a time for exhibition installations.

Does the Saatchi Gallery close between exhibitions?

Yes, completely. It closes to the general public for exhibition installation, and its own records show three separate multi-day closures in September alone: 13 to 17, 20 to 23 and 28 to 30 September. Check before travelling, because the closures list on their site was still showing only September dates on 6 October.

Can you take a pushchair into the Saatchi Gallery?

Yes. Regular-sized buggies and pushchairs are welcome in all exhibition spaces, even during busy periods. If the galleries are exceptionally busy they may ask some to use an internal buggy park, but the default is that they come in with you.

Is there parking at the Saatchi Gallery?

There are two blue badge disabled parking bays at the rear of the gallery, accessed via Turk's Row off Lower Sloane Street. With only two, booking well in advance is described as essential, on 020 7811 3070 or admin@saatchigallery.com.

Where is the Saatchi Gallery?

Duke of York's HQ on the King's Road, London SW3 4RY. It is about 300 yards from Sloane Square station, set back from the road on the left as part of the Duke of York's Square complex, which makes it easy to walk past.
