Greenwich Market shuts for the first six Mondays of every year.
“The market is closed on Christmas Day and the first six Mondays of the year so our traders can take a well-earned break from the busy Christmas rush.”
So from the first Monday in January through to mid-February, Monday is not a market day. That is six closures nobody publishes and the kind of thing you only find out by standing in Greenwich looking at a shut building.
The rest of the year it is open daily, 10am to 5.30pm, including bank holidays. Christmas Day is the only other closure.
Tuesday and Thursday have no arts and crafts at all
The market runs as two separate markets on an alternating timetable, and most visitors never notice until they arrive on the wrong day.
Arts & Crafts Market: Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and weekends.
Antiques & Collectables Market: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Read those together and three things fall out.
Friday is the only day both run. If you want the full market in one visit, it is Friday.
Tuesday and Thursday are antiques only. Turn up on a Tuesday expecting handmade jewellery and ceramics and you will find collectables instead.
Monday, Wednesday and the weekend are crafts only. No antiques at all.
Individual traders also keep their own days, published per trader on the market’s site, so a particular maker may be Saturday and Sunday only. If you are going back for something specific, check that trader rather than the market.
The street food market is seasonal and outside
A separate operation from the covered market, in a different place, on different days, with different hours.
The Cutty Sark Street Food Market runs Friday to Sunday in Cutty Sark Gardens, beside the ship.
Fridays: 10am to 5.30pm.
Saturdays and Sundays: 10am to 6.30pm.
So at the weekend the street food runs an hour later than the covered market, which closes at 5.30pm. That hour is the useful bit: if the market has shut and you still want to eat, walk to the gardens.
And the season: “Open every weekend from March until 29 November 2026.” After that date it stops for the winter, so a December visit to Greenwich gets the covered market and no street food market.
The food is Greek souvlaki, Italian pizza, Spanish paella and Korean corn dogs, among others.
Dogs are welcome, on a lead
“Dogs are welcome at Greenwich Market, just make sure to keep them on their lead.”
Individual shops and stalls may or may not allow them inside, so the covered aisles are fine and the shops are a question to ask.
That makes Greenwich one of the easier London markets for a walk that includes a dog, alongside the Dishoom Shoreditch verandah.
Entry is free and the floor is flat
“Entry is free! You only pay for the goodies that take your fancy.”
The market is wheelchair accessible and on one level, with most stalls easily reached. The market’s own caveat is worth repeating: some areas become crowded at peak hours on weekends, so a weekday or an early weekend visit is the comfortable one.
Being under a single roof also makes it the London market least affected by weather, which matters more than it sounds in Greenwich in February.
Getting there, and the fastest route is not the Tube
The DLR is across the road. Alight at Cutty Sark for Maritime Greenwich, which brings you into the centre of Greenwich.
Greenwich Station is a 10 minute walk, on Southeastern and Thameslink.
Greenwich Pier is five minutes away, served by Uber Boat by Thames Clippers from 24 piers along the river, plus City Cruises and Thames River Sightseeing for a slower sightseeing version.
There is no Underground station. From central London on the Tube you take the Jubilee or Elizabeth line to Canary Wharf and change to the DLR.
The riverboat is the one worth planning for: it is the only approach that shows you the Old Royal Naval College from the water, and it drops you five minutes from the door.

What is actually sold
The market indexes its traders by category: antiques, art and photography, books and music, collectables, crafts, fashion and shoes, food and drink, gifts, health and beauty, home and living, jewellery and accessories, kids, plants and flowers, special interest, toys and games, and vintage.
Four zones: the Cutty Sark Street Food Market, the Food & Drink area, the Market Stalls and the Shops.
Much of it is handmade by local designers and makers, and the food side covers Asian, Mediterranean, African and European cooking with vegan and vegetarian options.
There is a Christmas market, seasonal activities and an annual Love Your Local Market campaign.
How to plan it
January and early February: not a Monday. The first six Mondays of the year are closed.
Want both markets: go on a Friday, the only day crafts and antiques both run.
Want antiques: Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. No other day has them.
Want crafts: Monday, Wednesday, Friday or the weekend.
Eating at the weekend: the street food runs an hour later, to 6.30pm against the market’s 5.30pm.
Going in December: no street food market. It stops on 29 November 2026.
Bringing a dog: fine, on a lead.
Quietest visit: a weekday, since weekend peak hours get crowded.
Best approach: the riverboat to Greenwich Pier, five minutes away.

How to get in
The market closes on the first six Mondays of every year so traders can recover from Christmas, which nobody else publishes. Where to go next
Things to do in Greenwich covers the rest of the day, and Greenwich Park covers the hill and the Observatory above it.
London’s food markets compares the lot, and Spitalfields is the east London equivalent with its own day-by-day timetable.
Questions we get asked
Is Greenwich Market open on a Monday?
Yes for most of the year, but not in January and early February. The market closes on Christmas Day and on the first six Mondays of the year, which it explains is so traders can take a break after the Christmas rush. The rest of the year it opens daily from 10am to 5.30pm, including bank holidays.
What are Greenwich Market's opening hours?
Daily from 10am to 5.30pm, including bank holidays, closed on Christmas Day and the first six Mondays of the year. The separate Cutty Sark Street Food Market runs Friday 10am to 5.30pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 6.30pm, an hour later than the covered market at weekends.
Which day is the antiques market at Greenwich?
Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The Arts & Crafts Market runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and weekends instead, so Friday is the only day both markets run together, and Tuesday and Thursday have antiques and collectables but no arts and crafts at all.
Is Greenwich Market dog friendly?
Yes, dogs are welcome throughout the market as long as they are kept on a lead. Individual shops and stalls may or may not allow pets inside, so it is worth checking with each business.
How do you get to Greenwich Market?
The DLR is across the road: alight at Cutty Sark for Maritime Greenwich. Greenwich Station is a ten minute walk on Southeastern and Thameslink, and Greenwich Pier is five minutes away, served by Uber Boat by Thames Clippers. There is no Underground station, so from central London you take the Jubilee or Elizabeth line to Canary Wharf and change to the DLR.
Is Greenwich Market free?
Yes, entry is free and you pay only for what you buy. The market is also wheelchair accessible and on one level, though it warns that some areas get crowded at peak hours on weekends.
When does the Cutty Sark Street Food Market run?
Friday to Sunday in Cutty Sark Gardens, from 10am to 5.30pm on Fridays and 10am to 6.30pm on Saturdays and Sundays. It is seasonal, running every weekend from March until 29 November 2026, so a December visit to Greenwich gets the covered market without it.
