Dishoom Shoreditch: The Only One That Takes Dogs

Dogs on the verandah, ten more guests bookable online than King's Cross, and the two dishes you can only get on Boundary Street.

A prawn curry in a bowl, the Shoreditch branch's signature dish

The verandah at Dishoom Shoreditch takes dogs. No other Dishoom in London lists them.

“Outdoor verandah (dogs allowed, no pets on seats please!)”

That is from the facilities list on their own page, and it is the thing to know if you were planning a walk in Shoreditch with a dog and a long lunch. King’s Cross lists outdoor seating with no mention of dogs at all.

The one condition is clear enough: the dog is welcome on the verandah, not on the furniture.

Shoreditch takes ten more people online than King’s Cross

The difference that matters if you are organising anything.

Shoreditch: “We accept bookings online up to four months in advance for up to 26 guests and accept enquiries for 26+.”

King’s Cross: the same four months, but only up to 16 guests.

Same company, same system, ten people of difference. A party of twenty can book Shoreditch online this afternoon and would have to send King’s Cross an enquiry and wait.

Four months is a long booking horizon for London, so a December table is bookable in August.

But two of you still cannot book after six

The rule is identical at every branch and it is the reason for the queue.

“Dishoom is mostly a walk-in café. All are welcome, any time, no reservations needed. However, if you’d like to make a reservation, groups of any size may book during the day. After 6pm, we accept bookings for groups of six or more.”

So the twenty-six-guest allowance is generous and the two-guest allowance is nil. After 6pm the choice is six people or a queue.

Any size can book during the day, which makes breakfast and lunch the only reliable way to guarantee a small table. Shoreditch opens at 8am Monday to Friday and 9am at weekends.

Prawn Pathia is a Shoreditch dish

Every Dishoom carries its own specials, and these two belong to Boundary Street.

Prawn Pathia: prawns marinated overnight in ginger, garlic and lime juice, charred on the grill and set in a fiery, sweet and tangy tomato masala, with an onion salad and Roomali Roti for mopping. Dishoom calls it their most celebratory dish and recommends sharing it.

Hunterwali’s Julep: named for Mary Ann Evans, the masked stuntwoman better known as Fearless Nadia or Hunterwali, the Lady of the Whip, who was a star of 1940s Indian cinema.

King’s Cross has the Nalli Nihari Biryani and the Tanchoi Silk Fix instead. Neither branch carries the other’s.

No lift, which is the access difference

Both branches are step-free at the door, and one of them has a lift.

Shoreditch lists a wheelchair-accessible entrance, wheelchair-accessible seating, step-free access to the front door, a toilet on the same floor as the dining area and a disabled loo.

King’s Cross lists all of those plus a wheelchair-accessible lift.

So if a lift is part of what you need, King’s Cross is the branch, and the two are twenty minutes apart on the Overground and the Northern line.

The hours, and the bus stops

Monday to Wednesday 8am to 11pm.

Thursday and Friday 8am to midnight.

Saturday 9am to midnight.

Sunday 9am to 11pm.

Identical to King’s Cross, including the 9am weekend start, an hour later than weekdays.

Dishoom publishes its bus stops here, which is unusually specific: Shoreditch High Street Station (Stop N) and Bethnal Green Road (Stop L).

Where it is

Dishoom Shoreditch, 7 Boundary Street, London E2 7JE.

Shoreditch High Street on the Overground is the nearest station. Telephone 020 7420 9324.

Boundary Street runs between Redchurch Street and Calvert Avenue, which puts it a few minutes from the Shoreditch markets and the same walk from Brick Lane.

Facilities are private dining and the verandah. The kitchen is vegetarian-friendly, vegan-friendly and halal-friendly.

How to plan it

Bringing a dog: this is the branch, on the verandah, not on the seats.

Party of 17 to 26: book here online. King’s Cross stops at 16.

Table for two in the evening: not bookable. Six or more only after 6pm.

Guaranteed small table: breakfast or lunch, when any size can book.

December booking: four months ahead is allowed.

Want the prawns: Shoreditch only. The lamb shank biryani is King’s Cross only.

Need a lift: go to King’s Cross instead.

Standing
A Boundary Street branch with private dining and an outdoor verandah that allows dogs, though not on the seats

The only London Dishoom whose facilities list says dogs are allowed, on the verandah. It takes online group bookings for up to 26 guests where King’s Cross stops at 16, over the same four month horizon. After 6pm Dishoom only books groups of six or more at any branch, so smaller evening tables queue. Unlike King’s Cross it does not list a wheelchair-accessible lift. The Prawn Pathia and Hunterwali’s Julep are found only here.

Where to go next

Dishoom King’s Cross is in a Victorian railway goods shed and has the lift, and the Dishoom page covers the rest of the branches.

Shoreditch covers the markets and which day to come, and the Indian restaurants page puts Dishoom against the rest.

Questions we get asked

Is Dishoom Shoreditch dog friendly?

Yes, on the verandah. Dishoom Shoreditch's facilities list states that the outdoor verandah allows dogs, with the note that pets should not be on the seats. It is the only London Dishoom to list dogs in its facilities, and King's Cross lists outdoor seating without mentioning them.

How many people can book Dishoom Shoreditch online?

Up to 26 guests, booked online up to four months in advance, with enquiries accepted above that. That is ten more than the King's Cross branch, which caps online bookings at 16 over the same four month horizon.

Can you book a table for two at Dishoom Shoreditch?

During the day, yes, for groups of any size. After 6pm Dishoom only accepts bookings for groups of six or more at every branch, so an evening table for two has to be queued for. Breakfast and lunch are the only way to guarantee a small table.

What are the Dishoom Shoreditch specials?

The Prawn Pathia, prawns marinated overnight in ginger, garlic and lime, charred on the grill and set in a fiery-sweet-tangy tomato masala with onion salad and Roomali Roti, and the Hunterwali's Julep, a cocktail named for the 1940s masked stuntwoman Mary Ann Evans, known as Fearless Nadia. Neither is served at King's Cross.

What time does Dishoom Shoreditch open?

8am Monday to Friday and 9am on Saturday and Sunday, closing at 11pm Monday to Wednesday and Sunday and at midnight Thursday to Saturday. The hours match the King's Cross branch exactly, including the later weekend start.

Is Dishoom Shoreditch accessible?

It lists a wheelchair-accessible entrance, wheelchair-accessible seating, step-free access to the front door, a toilet on the same floor as the dining area and a disabled loo. It does not list a lift, which the King's Cross branch does, so King's Cross is the better choice if a lift is needed.
