Wilton’s Music Hall: The Kitchen Is Open 105 Minutes a Night

Four evenings a week, shutting at 18:45, so eating before a show means being at the table by six. Dogs in the bar but not the auditorium, and the hours change weekly.

The kitchen at the oldest music hall in the world is open for one hour and forty-five minutes a night.

Checked on 6 October 2026, the eating hours are:

Monday: closed.

Tuesday and Wednesday: 17:00 to 18:45.

Thursday: 12:30 to 14:15 and 17:30 to 19:15.

Friday: 17:00 to 18:45.

Saturday: 17:30 to 19:15.

Sunday: closed.

So dinner is available on four evenings a week, in a window of 105 minutes, and only Thursday has a lunch service.

The bar runs much longer, to 22:30 Tuesday to Saturday, but after the window closes it is bar snacks only. Wilton’s states the full menu is served “before evening shows and selected matinees only”.

Arrive thirty minutes before the show, not ten

Their own advice, and in a 105 minute window it is not padding.

“The Gatherers recommend that if you are attending the performance and would like to eat with us beforehand, please try to give yourself at least half an hour before the start of the show to order and enjoy your meal.”

Work it through on a Tuesday. Food stops at 18:45. A 19:30 curtain means ordering by 19:00 at the latest, which is already past the kitchen’s close. For an evening show, you need to be eating by about six.

The food is by The Gatherers, built around pizzas. Tables in the front of house spaces can be reserved by email.

Closed Sunday and Monday, and the hours change weekly

Two things to check before travelling.

The bars are closed all day Monday and Sunday.

And the standing warning: “Our opening hours change weekly, please check back here for the most up-to-date hours.”

Separately, the bar opens from 5.30pm on days with performances and from 1pm on days with matinees, so the opening depends on what is on rather than on the day of the week.

One more: “the building is occasionally closed due to private hire.” It is a popular wedding venue, voted Best Historic Wedding Venue at the UK Wedding Awards, so this happens.

Dogs in the bar, not in the auditorium

A clean split that is rarer than it sounds.

“Well behaved dogs are welcome in our bars, but only assistance dogs are allowed into performances in the auditorium.”

So the Mahogany Bar is a dog-friendly pub in a Grade II* listed music hall, and the show is not.

The ground floor is accessible. The first floor is nineteen stairs

Wilton’s is specific, which is what makes the information usable.

“The whole ground floor and auditorium is wheelchair accessible and there is an accessible, gender-neutral toilet on the ground floor next to the women’s toilets.”

Standard wheelchair spaces are in Row N of the stalls, booked by calling the Box Office on 020 7702 2789 rather than online.

Upstairs is a different matter: 19 stairs to the first floor, four more to the balcony, a step down to the balcony’s front row, and between one and five steps to reach the various rooms once you are up there.

The building-wide caveat: “there are changes in the level and surface of the floor throughout the building.”

Seating in the Mahogany Bar is limited and tables there can be reserved by email, subject to availability.

The oldest Grand Music Hall in the world

Wilton’s claim, and the programme behind it is larger than the building suggests.

“We present extraordinary theatre and music in the oldest Grand Music Hall in the world.”

Over 300 performances and over 80 productions each year, in a Grade II* listed and, usefully, air-conditioned hall.

The programme runs wide: silent film with live score, Shakespeare, stand-up, chamber music and talks can all appear in the same fortnight.

It also holds Cask Marque accreditation for its cask ale, which is not something most theatres can say.

Six spaces are hireable, including the Hall, the Studio, the Mahogany Bar, Champagne Charlie, the Mezzanine and the Study.

Pedestrian access only

Wilton’s Music Hall, 1 Graces Alley, London E1 8JB. The address comes with a note: pedestrian access only.

Box Office: 020 7702 2789, option 1, open Monday to Friday 11am to 6pm.

Nearest Underground: Tower Hill and Aldgate East in Zone 1, Shadwell in Zone 2. Nearest rail: Fenchurch Street.

From Shadwell on the Overground and DLR it is about 13 minutes on foot, via Cable Street and Fletcher Street.

Graces Alley is genuinely an alley, which is part of why the building survived and part of why people walk past it.

How to plan it

Eating before a show: be at the table by six. The kitchen shuts at 18:45 on most nights.

Allow 30 minutes to eat, on Wilton’s own advice.

After the show, it is bar snacks only.

Sunday and Monday: the bars are shut.

Check the week’s hours, which change, and whether the building is on private hire.

Wheelchair user: Row N, booked by phone. The first floor is 19 stairs.

Bringing a dog: fine in the bar, not in the show.

Getting there: Shadwell and a 13 minute walk, or Tower Hill and Aldgate East in Zone 1.

Standing
The oldest Grand Music Hall in the world, Grade II* listed and air conditioned, staging over 300 performances and more than 80 productions a year, with Cask Marque accredited ale in the Mahogany Bar

The kitchen is open for about 105 minutes a night on four evenings a week, so eating before a show means being at the table by around six. After the show and at midweek matinees it is bar snacks only. The bars close all day Sunday and Monday and the hours change weekly, and the building is occasionally closed entirely for private hire. The ground floor and auditorium are wheelchair accessible with standard spaces in Row N, but the first floor is 19 stairs with four more to the balcony. Well behaved dogs are welcome in the bars, but only assistance dogs in the auditorium.

Where to go next

Cheap theatre tickets covers the day seats and rush schemes at the bigger houses, and the West End shows page covers what is on.

The oldest pubs and the Prospect of Whitby cover the surviving east London rooms, and pre-theatre dinner covers eating first.

Questions we get asked

Can you eat at Wilton's Music Hall before a show?

Yes, but the window is short. Food runs 17:00 to 18:45 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 17:30 to 19:15 on Saturday, and 12:30 to 14:15 plus 17:30 to 19:15 on Thursday, with Sunday and Monday closed. What are Wilton's Music Hall's opening hours?

The bars run Tuesday to Saturday and are closed Sunday and Monday, opening from 5.30pm on performance days and from 1pm on matinee days, closing at 22:30. Wilton's notes that its hours change weekly and that the building is occasionally closed for private hire, so check before travelling.

Is Wilton's Music Hall wheelchair accessible?

The ground floor and auditorium are, with an accessible gender-neutral toilet on the ground floor. Standard wheelchair spaces are in Row N of the stalls and must be booked by calling the Box Office on 020 7702 2789. The first floor is reached by 19 stairs, with four more to the balcony and a step down to its front row, and floor levels and surfaces change throughout the building.

Are dogs allowed at Wilton's Music Hall?

Well behaved dogs are welcome in the bars, but only assistance dogs are permitted into performances in the auditorium.

How old is Wilton's Music Hall?

Wilton's describes itself as the oldest Grand Music Hall in the world.
