The Ned: A Bedroom Does Not Get You on the Rooftop

Eight restaurants in the old Midland Bank hall that anyone can book, three spaces that need a member, and the line that costs people a room booking.

The street at Bank junction in the City of London, where The Ned stands on Poultry

People book a room at The Ned to use the rooftop pool. A bedroom does not get you onto the rooftop. The hotel’s own membership page says it plainly: a guest staying in a bedroom gets access to all Ned’s Club spaces, excluding Ned’s Club Rooftop.

That is the single most expensive misunderstanding about this building, and the rest of this page is the same question answered properly: what you can walk into, what needs a member, and what a member gets.

What anyone can book

The Ned is in the former Midland Bank headquarters at 27 Poultry, EC2R 8AJ. The ground floor is a 3,000 square metre banking hall with restaurants arranged inside it, separated by 92 verdite columns and rows of Grade I listed walnut banking counters. No membership, no room booking, no door policy beyond a reservation.

The hotel describes eight restaurants and bars across the banking hall and lower ground floor, and names ten on the same page, because two of them are Sunday services rather than separate rooms.

Millie’s Lounge is the British restaurant in the grand hall itself. Lutyens Grill does fish and prime cuts from rare breeds, Longhorn, Hereford and Wagyu. Cecconi’s is the Italian, Kaia the Asian Pacific counter, Malibu Kitchen the Californian one, and Electric Bar and Diner the American. The Parlour is an intimate jazz and cabaret restaurant with live entertainment over dinner.

The Nickel Bar is the one to know. An American style cocktail bar open from morning until the early hours, with live performances on the Nickel Stage, from jazz trios to blues and emerging acts on New Music Mondays. It is the easiest way into the building and it runs later than anything else on the public floor.

On Sundays there are two feasts: Ned’s Feast with lobster, oysters and roasts, and Cecconi’s Feast with pasta, pizza, salads and Italian puddings.

The menus are refreshed weekly. The spa is public too, which is unusual for a members’ club building.

What needs a member

Three spaces, and they are the ones in the photographs.

Ned’s Club Upstairs is the rooftop: a heated pool, a restaurant, two converted domes and outdoor terraces. Members only, and as above, not included with a bedroom.

Ned’s Club Downstairs is The Vault, a bar and lounge that works as a late night club space, inside the original bank vault. The Library Bar is a Champagne and martini bar behind a jacquard curtain on the ground floor, open to Ned’s Club members and to the cheaper Ned Friends tier.

The two tiers, and what Friends actually buys

Ned’s Club is the full membership: the rooftop, the gym, the spa, The Vault, member events, and benefits in the ground floor restaurants and bedrooms. Every Ned’s Club member also gets Ned Friends.

Ned Friends is the lower tier and it is a discount card more than a door key. What it gets, in the hotel’s own words:

Evening access to the Library Bar, Wednesday to Saturday. 20 per cent off the ground floor public restaurants, from 4pm on Sunday and all day Monday to Wednesday, excluding experiences and the Feasts. 15 per cent off the best flexible bedroom rate. 15 per cent off Ned’s Club Spa treatments including barber and parlour services, on the same Sunday evening to Wednesday window. A special Ned’s Sunday Feast price for a member and three guests. Member rates in Soho House public restaurants on the same days, plus 15 per cent off Soho Home, Cowshed and Soho Skin.

Note the window on every one of those discounts: from 4pm on Sunday and all day Monday to Wednesday. The savings do not apply on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night, which is when most people would want to use them.

Neither tier publishes a price on the website. Both are applied for rather than bought.

How to see the building without joining

Book a table in the banking hall. Millie’s Lounge or the Nickel Bar puts you under the 92 columns for the price of a meal or a drink, which is the architecture people actually come for. The rooftop is a different building in every sense and the only route to it is membership.

For the rest of the category, the best hotels in London covers where else to stay, the best bars covers the drinking, and the restaurants cover the eating.

Questions we get asked

Can anyone go to The Ned?

Yes, to the ground floor. The banking hall holds eight restaurants and bars that anyone can book, and the spa is public. Ned's Club Rooftop, the Vault and the Library Bar need a membership.

Does a room at The Ned include the rooftop pool?

No. The hotel's membership page says bedroom guests get access to all Ned's Club spaces excluding Ned's Club Rooftop. The rooftop with the heated pool is for Ned's Club members.

What restaurants are in The Ned?

Millie's Lounge for British food in the banking hall, Lutyens Grill for rare breed beef and fish, Cecconi's for Italian, Kaia for Asian Pacific, Malibu Kitchen for Californian, Electric Bar and Diner for American, The Parlour for jazz and cabaret over dinner, and the Nickel Bar, an American cocktail bar open from morning until the early hours. On Sundays there are two feasts, Ned's Feast and Cecconi's Feast.

What is Ned Friends membership?

The lower tier. It gives evening access to the Library Bar from Wednesday to Saturday, 20 per cent off the ground floor public restaurants from 4pm on Sunday and all day Monday to Wednesday, 15 per cent off the best flexible bedroom rate and off spa treatments on the same days, and member rates in Soho House public restaurants. It does not include the rooftop.

How much is membership at The Ned?

The Ned does not publish membership prices on its website. Both Ned's Club and Ned Friends are applied for rather than bought off the page.

What was The Ned before?

The Midland Bank headquarters. The ground floor is the original 3,000 square metre banking hall, with 92 verdite columns and rows of Grade I listed walnut banking counters, and the late night club space downstairs is inside the original bank vault.
