The published opening time for St Dunstan in the East is 8am to 7pm. The actual rule is 8am to 7pm or dusk, whichever is earlier, and in December dusk in London is around four o’clock. So for a third of the year the garden shuts roughly three hours before the time everybody quotes.
That is the single thing worth knowing before you travel, because this is a place people visit for the light.
The practical details
St Dunstan’s Hill, EC3R 5DD. Free, with no booking. Nearest tube is Monument or Tower Hill.

It is run by the City of London’s gardens team, on 020 7374 4127.
What is actually there
A garden inside the ruins of a Wren church. Benches, a fountain, and greenery growing over and down the surviving walls, with the tower and steeple still standing above it.
It is small. Fifteen minutes is a realistic visit and an hour is a long lunch, which is exactly what the City workers around it use it for.
Photographs, and the line the City draws
This is one of the most photographed corners of London, and the rule is clearer than people assume.
Visitors are welcome to take photos and videos with no permission needed. No form, no fee.
An organised photoshoot, meaning anything with a cast and crew, needs a licence or permit applied for in advance. So a camera is fine and a shoot is not, and the dividing line is whether you have brought people to be in it.
Why a Wren church is a garden
The church of St Dunstan was built around 1100 and is Grade I listed. A south aisle was added in 1391 and repaired in 1631.
It was severely damaged in the Great Fire of 1666, and severely damaged again in the Blitz in 1941. Wren’s tower and steeple survived the bombing.
After the war, during the reorganisation of the Anglican Church, the decision was taken not to rebuild it. In 1967 the City of London decided to turn the remains into a public garden, and it opened in 1970.
So the ruin is deliberate. It was not left to rot and then rediscovered: a committee chose, three years after the decision not to rebuild, to make the shell into a garden on purpose.
When to go
Early is better, and in winter early is the only option. From November to January you are working against a four o’clock closing, and the garden faces into the City so the light goes off the walls well before that.
Weekday lunchtimes bring the office crowd from the surrounding blocks. A weekend morning is the quietest it gets.
What to pair it with
It sits between the river and the City, which makes it a five minute detour rather than a destination.
The Tower of London is a short walk east and Tower Bridge just beyond it, so the garden works as the free, quiet thing you do before or after paying for either.
The Shard and Borough Market are across London Bridge, and Sky Garden, which is also free, is ten minutes north. The best views page covers how those compare.
