Book a 90 minute treatment on a Friday and you get no spa facilities at all. On a Thursday, the same treatment gets you everything except the pool.
The access rules at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park spa are a ladder, published in the small print, and getting them wrong costs real money.
“Enjoy access to our Spa facilities when booking a minimum of 1 hour and 30 minutes treatment from Monday to Thursday, or 2 hours from Friday to Sunday. For bookings of two hours or more, receive complimentary access to our 17-metre swimming pool.”
Read as a ladder:
Under 90 minutes, any day: treatment only. No steam room, no sauna, no relaxation area.
90 minutes, Monday to Thursday: facilities included. No pool.
90 minutes, Friday to Sunday: no facilities. The weekend threshold is two hours, not ninety minutes.
Two hours or more, any day: facilities plus the 17-metre pool.
So the single most useful piece of planning here is: if you want the pool, book two hours. If you want the facilities on a weekend, book two hours. A 90 minute weekend booking is the one that leaves you with nothing but the treatment room.
For reference, two published treatments span exactly that gap. Restorative Hot Stones, 1 hour 30 minutes, £305. English Rose Poultice Massage, 2 hours, £370. Sixty-five pounds more buys the half hour, the facilities and the pool.
What the facilities actually are, and they are gender-specific: an Amethyst Crystal Steam Room, a sauna, a Vitality Pool and a Zen Colour Therapy Relaxation Area.
Arrive 45 minutes early, and no, they will not extend
Stated twice on the same page, which suggests it comes up.
“Guests are encouraged to arrive 45 minutes before their appointment time.”
Then, bluntly: “Please understand that late arrivals will not receive an extension of scheduled treatments.”
Forty-five minutes is not padding. It is the time to use the heat and water rooms you have just paid to unlock, which is the whole point of clearing the 90 minute or two hour threshold.
The spa opens daily 9am to 9pm. Cancellation needs 24 hours’ notice, or 100 per cent is charged, and a credit card is required at booking.
They also ask for phones off and locked away: “we would appreciate it if you can turn off your mobile devices and secure them in your locker.”
The spa is 18 and over, but there is a children’s treatment menu
Two facts that look contradictory and are not.
“The minimum age requirement for access to the spa and fitness centre is 18.”
So no under-18s in the spa or the gym. But the hotel separately runs Mini M.O. Treatments, children’s spa treatments made with OSKIA, including a ‘Rest Day’ range for young skin described as protecting the microbiome, giving UV defence and delivering antioxidants, with a note that a balanced microbiome helps keep teenage blemishes in check.
The resolution is that children’s services are arranged separately rather than through general spa access, and the hotel asks you to email the spa directly to set them up. Do that in advance, not on arrival.
You can ride a horse in Hyde Park from the age of four
Almost no Londoner knows this is possible, and the hotel runs it as a bookable experience.
Hyde Park Riders is a private, guided ride through the park, run with Hyde Park Stables, which the hotel describes as “one of the last remaining horse mews in Central London”, privately owned by the Hall-McAteer family, international showjumpers, beside a venue with over 300 years of riding history.
The age and ability detail is the part that matters:
“Families can create lasting memories together, with rides suitable for parents and children aged four and up. Horses and ponies are matched to your height and ability.”
From four years old, and no experience needed: the hotel is explicit that it suits “an experienced equestrian or trying horseback riding for the first time.”
Two routes to choose between:
Rotten Row, “once known as The King’s Old Road, where aristocrats once paraded in their finery during the 18th and 19th centuries.”
The banks of the Serpentine, for the quieter ride.
The trimmings are specific: LeMieux saddle pads embroidered with the Mandarin Oriental fan, and riding gloves by Holland Cooper provided as part of the experience. On request, the ride can be extended with a portrait session by the photographer Mary McCartney, including a private tour of her studio.
Riding is booked through reservations on 020 7201 3773.
There is a postpartum retreat
Unusual enough to be worth knowing exists, and it is a collaboration rather than a hotel package.
Run with The Tenth, described as “an all-inclusive postpartum wellness destination, created to support mothers in the weeks following birth”, built around rest, recovery and preparation.
The element that distinguishes it from a spa break: “day and night infant care, parental guidance, and considered support for families.” Night care, with practitioners on hand, in the weeks after birth.
Enquiries go to The Tenth rather than the hotel.
Children stay in connecting rooms, not on a sofa bed
The family accommodation has a consistent structure worth understanding before booking.
Three room types, Family Room, Mandarin Family Room and Knightsbridge Family Room, are each described identically: “two connecting rooms”. Not one large room, but two rooms with a door between them.
The Family Hyde Park Suite is different again: one bedroom overlooking Hyde Park, a salon, and a dedicated study with a foldable bed, plus two marble bathrooms, one with a walk-in shower and one with a stand-alone bath.
Two children’s stay programmes:
Little Ranger Adventures, up to 12 years old. Children become a Sloane Ranger, Park Ranger or Royal Ranger, with a treasure hunt map and movie nights with popcorn.
Very Little Ranger, up to 3 years old, run with the baby brand My 1st Years.
In-room extras include tipi tents and birthday celebrations, and the restaurants have kids’ menus.
Beyond the horses, the family experience list runs to a music recording masterclass at Metropolis Studios, a VR, AR and AI digital design workshop, an influencer content masterclass, a cupcake decorating session with the hotel’s pastry chefs, a Georgian khinkali class at Kinkally, tennis at Kensington Tennis Club, and a helicopter flight along the Thames.
Four places to eat, including a Heston
All open to non-residents, with their own direct lines.
Dinner by Heston Blumenthal: 020 7201 3833.
The Aubrey: 020 7201 3899.
The Rosebery: 020 7201 3828.
Mandarin Bar: 020 7201 3724.
Breakfast by Mandarin Oriental: 020 7201 3833.
Dinner by Heston is the destination restaurant and the hardest table. The Aubrey is the Japanese izakaya, the Rosebery does afternoon tea, and the Mandarin Bar is the cocktail room.
The hotel of two addresses
Their own phrase, and it is the most useful thing to understand about the building.
“Many people know us as ‘The Hotel of Two Addresses’, as our unique location can transport you directly from our front door into the vibrancy of Knightsbridge and to the peaceful retreat of Hyde Park at the back.”
Knightsbridge at the front, Hyde Park at the back. Which is also why the riding works: the park is the other side of the building.
Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, 66 Knightsbridge, London SW1X 7LA. 020 7235 2000.
Knightsbridge station is minutes away. Sloane Street, Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Green Park are all walking distance, as are the Royal Albert Hall and the South Kensington museums.
How to plan it
Want the 17-metre pool: book a treatment of two hours or more. Nothing shorter includes it.
Weekend spa: two hours minimum for any facility access at all.
Monday to Thursday: 90 minutes unlocks the facilities, but still not the pool.
Arrive 45 minutes early. Late arrivals lose the time.
Cancel 24 hours ahead or pay in full.
Children in the spa: email the spa in advance. General access is 18 and over.
Riding in Hyde Park: from age four, beginners included, booked through reservations.
Choose your route: Rotten Row for the history, the Serpentine for the quiet.
Family rooms are two connecting rooms, so check which configuration you are getting.

How to get in
Spa facility access is tiered: a 90 minute treatment unlocks the facilities Monday to Thursday only, the weekend threshold is two hours, and the 17-metre swimming pool needs a booking of two hours or more, so a 90 minute weekend treatment includes no facilities at all. Guests are asked to arrive 45 minutes early and late arrivals do not get extended treatments. The spa and fitness centre are 18 and over, though children’s Mini M.O. treatments are arranged separately by email. Hyde Park Riders offers private guided rides in the park from age four, for beginners as well as experienced riders, along Rotten Row or the Serpentine, run with Hyde Park Stables. Family rooms are two connecting rooms rather than one large room.
Where to go next
The best hotels in London compares the rest, and spa days in London cover the treatment rooms.
Hyde Park covers the park at the back, and afternoon tea covers the Rosebery.
Questions we get asked
Can you use the pool at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park?
Only with a spa treatment of two hours or more, which includes complimentary access to the 17-metre swimming pool. Shorter bookings do not include it. Spa facilities other than the pool, meaning the Amethyst Crystal Steam Room, sauna, Vitality Pool and Zen Colour Therapy Relaxation Area, come with a 90 minute treatment Monday to Thursday or a two hour treatment Friday to Sunday.
How much is the spa at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park?
Published examples span the access thresholds: Restorative Hot Stones at 1 hour 30 minutes is £305, and the English Rose Poultice Massage at 2 hours is £370. The extra £65 also buys facility access on any day of the week plus the 17-metre pool, so the longer booking is better value than the time difference suggests. Cancellation requires 24 hours' notice or the full amount is charged.
Can children use the spa at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park?
Not through general access, which is 18 and over for both the spa and the fitness centre. The hotel does run Mini M.O. Treatments for children, made with OSKIA and including a Rest Day range for young skin and teenage blemishes, but these are arranged separately by emailing the spa, so book ahead rather than asking on arrival.
Can you ride a horse in Hyde Park?
Yes, and from the age of four. Hyde Park Riders is a private guided ride run with Hyde Park Stables, described as one of the last remaining horse mews in central London, and it suits complete beginners as well as experienced riders, with horses and ponies matched to height and ability. You can choose between Rotten Row, once known as The King's Old Road, and a quieter ride beside the Serpentine. Riding gloves by Holland Cooper are provided.
What restaurants are at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park?
Four, all open to non-residents: Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, The Aubrey, The Rosebery and the Mandarin Bar, plus Breakfast by Mandarin Oriental. Dinner by Heston is the destination restaurant and the hardest booking, The Aubrey is the izakaya, The Rosebery serves afternoon tea and the Mandarin Bar is the cocktail room.
Are the family rooms at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park one room or two?
Two. The Family Room, Mandarin Family Room and Knightsbridge Family Room are each described as two connecting rooms rather than one large room. The Family Hyde Park Suite is a different arrangement: one bedroom overlooking the park, a salon, a study with a foldable bed, and two marble bathrooms. Children's stay programmes run as Little Ranger Adventures up to age 12 and Very Little Ranger up to age 3.
Where is Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park?
66 Knightsbridge, SW1X 7LA. The hotel calls itself the Hotel of Two Addresses because the front door opens onto Knightsbridge and the back onto Hyde Park. Knightsbridge station is minutes away, and Sloane Street, Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Green Park, the Royal Albert Hall and the South Kensington museums are all walkable.
