Two authoritative sources give two different Saturday opening times for Maltby Street Market, and they disagree by an hour at each end.
Southwark Council, which licenses the market, publishes Saturday 9am to 4pm.
Visit London and the general listings publish Saturday 10am to 5pm.
Both agree on Sunday: 11am to 4pm. And both agree it is closed Monday to Friday.
The safe conclusion, and the one we would act on: arrive between 10am and 4pm on a Saturday, which is the window both sources agree is open. Before ten or after four on a Saturday, you are relying on one source and not the other.
One honest note on their own website
Checked on 5 October 2026: maltby.st, the market’s own address, could not be reached.
Which is why the council listing is the better source for the basics here, and why the hours have drifted apart across the various guides that copy from each other rather than from the market.
It is a weekend market and nothing else
Closed Monday to Friday. Southwark states it plainly.
That matters more than it sounds because this part of Bermondsey has traders in the railway arches operating on their own schedules through the week. The market itself is a two-day event, and a Wednesday walk down the Ropewalk is a walk past shutters.
Note also how short it is. Sunday runs five hours and Saturday six or seven depending whose figure you take. Against Borough Market, twenty minutes away and open most of the week, this is a narrow window.
What it actually sells
Southwark’s description is the plainest: a small but bustling market offering fresh produce, including bread, cakes, meats and cheeses.
Which is a useful corrective. Maltby Street is often written about as a street food destination, and it is, but the council licence describes a produce market. Expect both, and expect it to be tight: the Ropewalk is a narrow alley between railway arches, not a square.
That narrowness is the thing to plan around. It is one of the most crowded food markets in London per square metre, and arriving at the start of the published hours rather than at lunchtime is the whole trick.
Where it is
41 Maltby Street, London SE1 3PA, running along the Ropewalk.
Buses C10 and 188.
Tube: Bermondsey, London Bridge or Borough. None of them is on the doorstep, and Bermondsey is the closest of the three.
It sits on the Bermondsey beer mile, so the arches around it include breweries and taprooms keeping their own weekend hours.
Trading here
If you want a stall, enquiries go to maltbystmanager@gmail.com, which Southwark publishes as the contact. There is no application form, just the address.
How to plan it
Saturday between 10am and 4pm, the window both sources agree on.
Sunday 11am to 4pm, where the sources agree.
Not on a weekday. It is closed Monday to Friday.
Go early rather than at lunch, because the Ropewalk is a narrow alley and it fills.
Arriving by tube: Bermondsey, the nearest of the three.
Wanting a bigger market or a weekday: Borough Market, twenty minutes west.

How to get in
Southwark Council, which licenses the market, and the main tourist listings disagree about Saturday hours by an hour at each end, so the reliable window is 10am to 4pm. The market’s own website could not be reached on 5 October 2026. It is closed Monday to Friday and the Ropewalk is a narrow alley that fills at lunchtime.
Where to go next
Borough Market is twenty minutes west and open most of the week, and the food markets page covers the rest.
Padella is at Borough Market, and the Borough Market restaurants cover eating properly nearby.
Questions we get asked
What are Maltby Street Market's opening times?
Sources disagree about Saturday. Southwark Council, which licenses the market, says 9am to 4pm, while Visit London and most listings say 10am to 5pm. Both agree Sunday is 11am to 4pm and that the market is closed Monday to Friday, so the reliable Saturday window is 10am to 4pm.
Is Maltby Street Market open during the week?
No. It is closed Monday to Friday and runs at weekends only. Some of the surrounding railway arch businesses on the Bermondsey beer mile keep their own hours, but the market itself is a two-day event.
Where is Maltby Street Market?
41 Maltby Street, London SE1 3PA, running along the Ropewalk between the railway arches. Bermondsey is the nearest tube, with London Bridge and Borough also walkable, and buses C10 and 188 serve it.
What can you buy at Maltby Street Market?
Southwark Council describes it as a small but bustling market offering fresh produce including bread, cakes, meats and cheeses. In practice it is both a produce market and a street food destination, in a narrow alley rather than an open square.
Is Maltby Street Market busy?
Very, because the Ropewalk is a narrow alley between railway arches rather than a square. Going at the start of the published hours rather than at lunchtime makes the biggest difference.
