Things to Do

No. 74

Darts Is £10 and Evensong Is Free. Fun Things to Do in London, Priced.

This site takes no bookings and earns no commission, so it can say the thing the voucher sites cannot: most of the best activities in London are not on sale, and the ones sold hardest are the weakest.

A group of adults playing darts together in a bar, the competitive socialising format London does best

Search for London experiences, or for things to do in London as an adult, and you get two kinds of page. Lists of attractions you already know about, and experience vouchers somebody wants to sell you.

This site takes no bookings and earns no commission on anything here, which means it can tell you the thing the voucher sites cannot: most of the best activities in London are not on sale, and several of the ones that are sold hardest are the weakest.

London experiences, priced, so you can see the problem

The reason the voucher sites are useless is easier to see as a list than as an argument. Here is what the good things actually cost, checked against each operator’s own published information in September 2026 and rechecked on 2 October 2026.

The thing What it costs
Evensong at Westminster Abbey Free
Sky Garden Free, but ticketed ahead
The national museums Free
A swim in the Hampstead ponds Pay as you go, and free before 9.30am if you are under 16 or over 60
A Santander Cycle £1.65 for 30 minutes, or £3.50 for a day pass
Social Darts at Flight Club From £10 per person
A West End show From £13
A padel membership £40 a month at the Padel Yard, on a twelve month commitment
St Paul’s, walked round in daylight £27

Read the top and the bottom of that table together. Forty five minutes of one of the finest choirs in Europe, inside Westminster Abbey, costs nothing. Walking round St Paul’s in daylight with no music costs £27. Both are advertised as things to do in London and only one of them is sold to you.

Ten pounds is the real price of a good evening here. Darts at Flight Club starts there, a West End show starts at £13, and a bike across town is £1.65. The experience vouchers are selling the same city at three to ten times those numbers, and the mark up buys you a gift box rather than a better evening.

The same applies to a gym, only worse, because most of them will not print the number at all. What London gyms actually cost sets the published prices against the ones you have to ring for: The Gym Group says £20.99 a month on the page you land on, and Third Space says nothing.

The one number worth checking twice is the membership. £40 a month for padel is £480 over the twelve months you are committing to, on a sport you may not still be playing in March. Our padel guide has the booking windows and the cancellation terms, which are the part nobody reads.

London activities for adults: competitive socialising, which London does better than anywhere

The single biggest change to London evenings in the last decade. Darts, shuffleboard, crazy golf, ping pong and bowling, all served with a proper bar attached rather than a fluorescent family centre.

It works because it solves the problem dinner creates: you are doing something together rather than sitting opposite each other looking for conversation. It is the best format in the city for a group that does not know each other well.

The activity bars guide covers every category with the booking rules, which matter more here than anywhere: the good ones sell their weekend slots weeks ahead and hold almost nothing back for walk ins.

Swimming outdoors, all year

The most underrated thing on this page, and it costs almost nothing.

The Hampstead Heath bathing ponds

Address
Hampstead Heath, north London
Nearest
Hampstead, Gospel Oak or Hampstead Heath
Hours
Parliament Hill Lido, the Kenwood Ladies' Pond and the Highgate Men's Pond are open all year, including Christmas Day. The Hampstead Mixed Pond runs April to October
Price
Pay as you go or a season ticket. Under 16s and over 60s swim free before 9.30am with proof of age
Standing
Three natural bathing ponds and a 60 metre lido, run by the City of London Corporation

Swimming outdoors in London in February is a real thing that real people do, and it is the cheapest genuinely memorable activity in this guide. The free morning hour for under 16s and over 60s is the single most underused offer in the city.

Getting out on a bike or on foot

The Tamsin Trail

Address
The perimeter of Richmond Park, TW10
Nearest
Richmond, then a walk, or Roehampton Gate for the car park
Hours
Whenever the pedestrian gates are open, which is most of the year, all day
Price
Free, bikes hired separately
Standing
Just over 7 miles, or 11km, the full way round the boundary

Two to four hours on foot and an easy afternoon on a bike, through 2,500 acres with over 630 wild deer in it. Bikes can be hired from Parkcycle at the Roehampton Gate car park. Between September and November the deer are rutting, and the Royal Parks ask you to keep 50 metres away, which is further than most people think.

The Richmond Park guide has the gate times and the deer rules in full, and the parks guide covers where else is worth the trip.

Learning something, for one evening

Classes are the format that ages best: you keep the thing you learned. Two work particularly well in London.

Cocktail making is the one most people book, and the quality varies enormously between a proper bar teaching you three drinks and a room with a cocktail shaker and a hen party in it. The cocktail bars guide covers which rooms are serious about it.

Wine tasting is the better of the two if you actually want to learn rather than to drink. The wine tasting guide covers the difference between a tutored tasting and a paid drinks party.

Free, and better than most of what is sold

Evensong at Westminster Abbey. Forty five minutes of one of the finest choirs in Europe, inside the Abbey, sitting in the Quire. 5pm on weekdays, 3pm at weekends, and it costs nothing while the tourists outside paid £27 to walk round St Paul’s in daylight with no music.

Sky Garden. Three floors of planted terrace at the top of 20 Fenchurch Street, free with a ticket booked ahead. The paid viewing platforms nearby charge upwards of thirty pounds a head for a comparable height.

The South Kensington subway. A pedestrian tunnel runs from inside the station to the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum and the V and A. Three world class free museums and barely a step outside, which turns a wet afternoon into the best one of the trip.

What to skip

The gift experience voucher, usually. They are sold on the strength of the box rather than the day, the good operators sell direct at the same price, and the voucher adds an expiry date and a booking fee to something you could have booked yourself. If you know what you want, book it.

Anything sold to you outside a station. Bus tours, combination passes and river cruises pushed by a person with a clipboard are all cheaper online, and most of them duplicate something free.

A paid viewing platform, when Sky Garden exists. You are buying altitude that is free four hundred metres away.

How to pick between activities in London

Most activities to do in London fall into one of the groups above, and the useful question is never which is best. It is which one suits the evening you actually have.

Match the activity to the group, not to the budget. Competitive socialising works for people who do not know each other. A class works for two. A long walk works for people who already talk easily and would find a darts bar exhausting.

Book the thing, leave the evening around it loose. One booked activity and an unbooked drink afterwards beats a three part itinerary, every time.

Weekday, if you can. Every activity bar in London sells its Saturday slots first and charges most for them, and the same room on a Tuesday is half empty.

Everything here was taken from each venue’s own published information in September 2026 and rechecked on 2 October 2026. Prices and hours change. Confirm before you book.

Where to go next

Regent Street Cinema charges six pounds for the Monday classic matinee if you are over 55, in the room where UK cinema started.

The board game cafes are the quiet version of an evening out, with a door charge and a three hour limit at Draughts and a minimum spend at Library Pot.

The activity bars cover competitive socialising in full, and the unique things cover the strange corners rather than the activities.

The immersive experiences are the indoor booking in this category, and the one permanent name asks for two hours and stops admitting two hours before it closes.

Free things to do in London covers how much of this costs nothing, and the guide for couples covers doing any of it with one other person.

Questions we get asked

What activities are there in London for adults?

Competitive socialising is what London does better than anywhere: darts, shuffleboard, crazy golf and ping pong with a proper bar attached. Beyond that, swimming outdoors at the Hampstead Heath ponds all year round, cycling or walking the seven mile Tamsin Trail through Richmond Park, and classes in cocktail making or wine tasting. Several of the best are free.

What are the best experiences in London?

The ones nobody sells you. Evensong at Westminster Abbey is forty five minutes of one of Europe's finest choirs for nothing. Swimming at the Highgate Men's Pond or the Kenwood Ladies' Pond on Hampstead Heath is open every day of the year including Christmas Day. Sky Garden gives you the view free with a booked ticket. All three beat most of what appears in an experience day catalogue.

What can adults do in London at night?

Activity bars are the format that works best for a group, and the good ones sell weekend slots weeks ahead. Beyond those, the V and A opens until 10pm on Fridays and Tate Modern until 9pm on Friday and Saturday, which are the emptiest and best hours those buildings ever have. London at night covers the timeline of an evening in full.

Are London experience day vouchers worth it?

Usually not, and this site earns nothing either way. The good operators sell direct at the same price, and the voucher adds an expiry date and a booking fee to something you could book yourself in two minutes. They are sold on the strength of the box rather than the day. If you know what you want, book it directly.

What are fun things to do in London that are not tourist attractions?

Swim in a pond on Hampstead Heath, cycle the perimeter of Richmond Park among 630 wild deer, spend a Friday evening in the V and A after the school groups have gone, or play darts properly in a bar that takes it seriously. None of these appear on an attractions list and all of them are what people who live here actually do.

What is there to do in London on a budget?

More than almost anywhere. Every national museum is free, Evensong is free, Sky Garden is free with a booked ticket, and the parks are free and enormous. Swimming on the Heath costs a few pounds and is free before 9.30am for under 16s and over 60s. The free things guide covers the full list.
