Liberty gives you an extra hour for a month, and almost nobody plans around it.

From 24 November to 26 December the store opens until 9pm Monday to Saturday instead of its usual 8pm. That is the one month of the year when it is busiest and the one month when there is a quiet hour at the end of every day.

The other thing worth knowing is the same quirk Fortnum’s publishes: on a Sunday the doors open at 11.30am for browsing only, and selling starts at midday.

The hours, including the festive ones

Monday to Saturday: 10am to 8pm.

Sunday: midday to 6pm, with browsing from 11.30am.

Bank holidays: 10am to 8pm.

And from 24 November to 26 December:

Monday to Saturday: 10am to 9pm. Sunday stays midday to 6pm with the same 11.30am browsing window.

Christmas Eve: 9am to 5pm, which opens an hour earlier than normal and shuts three hours earlier. Worth writing down, because it is the opposite of what people assume.

Christmas Day: closed. Boxing Day: 10am to 8pm. New Year’s Day: 10am to 8pm.

The Sunday browsing rule, explained

This catches people out across all the big London stores and it is not the shop being awkward.

Large shops in England and Wales may only trade for six consecutive hours on a Sunday. Liberty, like Fortnum & Mason, chooses midday to 6pm as those hours and opens the doors half an hour early so you can look around first.

So the half hour from 11.30 is real and useful: the building is open, the crowds have not arrived, and you can work out what you want before anyone can pay for anything.

The student discount, which is online only

Liberty gives students 15 per cent off a first purchase and 10 per cent off every purchase after that, through Student Beans, for students currently studying in the UK.

The catch is in the terms: it applies to products bought directly from libertylondon.com. It is an online discount, not a card to wave at a till, so the plan is to look in the shop and buy on the phone before you leave it.

The building

Liberty has traded since 1875 and the mock-Tudor store behind Regent Street, on Great Marlborough Street, is the reason half the visitors come. It is a shop that people photograph from the outside and then go into anyway.

The postcode is W1B 5AH, nearest to Oxford Circus.

Customer services are on the third floor, which is where to go for anything that cannot be solved on a shop floor.

What it is actually good at

Liberty Fabrics is the thing the shop is known for worldwide and the department most worth the trip, whether or not you sew.

Beyond that: beauty services, expert appointments, store events and store experiences, all bookable rather than walk-in, so check before you arrive expecting one.

How to plan it

Quietest: Sunday 11.30am, during the browsing window, or a weekday evening in the last hour.

In December: after 8pm, when the extra festive hour is running and the day trippers have gone.

A student: look in store, buy online, at 15 per cent off the first time.

Christmas Eve: get there for 9am, because it closes at five.

Oxford Street is at the end of the road, Selfridges is ten minutes west and open four hours later on a weekday, and Soho starts on the other side of Regent Street.

Questions we get asked

What time does Liberty London open?

10am to 8pm Monday to Saturday, and midday to 6pm on Sunday with browsing from 11.30am. From 24 November to 26 December it stays open until 9pm Monday to Saturday.

Why does Liberty open at 11.30 on Sunday but not sell until noon?

Large shops in England and Wales may trade for only six consecutive hours on a Sunday. Liberty uses midday to 6pm as those hours and opens the doors half an hour earlier so you can browse first. Fortnum & Mason does the same.

Is there a student discount at Liberty London?

Yes, through Student Beans: 15 per cent off a first purchase and 10 per cent off every purchase afterwards, for students currently studying in the UK. It applies to products bought directly from libertylondon.com, so it is an online discount rather than one to use at the till.
