Kensington Gardens closes at dusk. Hyde Park, through the same gate, stays open until midnight.
Kensington Gardens: pedestrian gates 6am to 6:30pm, and the park’s own FAQ says it “closes at dusk each day, which varies throughout the year”.
Hyde Park: pedestrian gates 5am to midnight.
They are one continuous expanse of grass divided by West Carriage Drive and the Serpentine. There is no wall. But in December, when dusk is around four o’clock, the western half shuts eight hours before the eastern half.
So a winter walk across the two parks has to run west to east, not the other way, or you will find yourself walking out of a closed park.
And in summer the gap closes: dusk in June is after 9pm, so the two keep roughly similar hours. The difference is seasonal, and it is widest exactly when people want an evening walk least and a lit route home most.
Two sixty-five acres, or twenty Royal Albert Halls
The Royal Parks’ own comparison, and a useful one given the Albert Hall is across the road.
“Kensington Gardens is approximately 107 hectares (265 acres) in size – large enough to hold 20 Royal Albert Halls!”
The perimeter is approximately 2.7 miles if you ignore the Long Water, and 3.3 miles if you include it.
That 0.6 mile difference is the Long Water inlet, and it is the walk worth doing: it is where the Peter Pan statue stands.
It was a private garden, and the layout still shows it
“Once upon a time, this park was the private playground of the nobility.”
It was dreamed up by Queen Caroline in the 18th century and formed part of Kensington Palace. That origin is why it feels formal where Hyde Park feels like common ground: avenues, vistas and flower walks laid out for a court rather than paths worn by a city.
What to find in it:
The Peter Pan statue, down by the Long Water among the swans and ducks.
The Albert Memorial, facing the Royal Albert Hall.
The Italian Gardens, with symmetrical beds and cascading fountains, at the north end.
The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Playground, built around a wooden pirate ship.
Plus meandering flower walks on each side of the park, and wilder meadow areas with veteran trees.
Paddington is 500 metres away
Closer than most people realise, and it changes how you arrive.
“London Paddington – located approximately 500m north of West Carriage Drive”, served by GWR, the Heathrow Express and the Elizabeth line.
That makes Kensington Gardens the easiest Royal Park to reach straight off a Heathrow train, and a genuine option for killing two hours between connections.
On the Underground: Lancaster Gate and Queensway on the Central line, and Bayswater on the Circle, each a few minutes’ walk.
There are marked cycleways through and around the park and several cycle hire points.
How to plan it
Winter evening: it shuts at dusk. Around 4pm in December, against midnight in Hyde Park next door.
Walking both parks in winter: go west to east, ending in Hyde Park, which stays open.
Opens at 6am, an hour later than Hyde Park.
Peter Pan is on the Long Water, which adds 0.6 miles to the perimeter walk.
Coming off a Heathrow train: it is 500m from Paddington.
Children: the Diana Memorial Playground and its pirate ship.

How to get in
It closes at dusk while Hyde Park, which adjoins it across West Carriage Drive with no wall between, stays open until midnight. In December that is a gap of roughly eight hours, so a winter walk across both should run west to east. It also opens an hour later than Hyde Park, at 6am against 5am. The perimeter is 2.7 miles ignoring the Long Water and 3.3 miles including it, and the Long Water is where the Peter Pan statue stands.
Where to go next
Hyde Park is the other half and stays open to midnight, and London’s parks compares them all.
The Royal Albert Hall faces the Albert Memorial, and Knightsbridge covers the streets south of the park.
Questions we get asked
What time does Kensington Gardens close?
At dusk, which varies through the year, with the summary giving 6:30pm. That means around 4pm in December. Hyde Park, which adjoins it across West Carriage Drive, stays open until midnight, so in winter the two halves of what looks like one park close around eight hours apart.
Is Kensington Gardens the same as Hyde Park?
No, they are two separate Royal Parks divided by West Carriage Drive and the Serpentine, with no wall between them. They keep different hours: Kensington Gardens runs 6am to dusk, Hyde Park 5am to midnight. Kensington Gardens was laid out as part of Kensington Palace and is the more formal of the two.
How big is Kensington Gardens?
About 107 hectares or 265 acres, which the Royal Parks describe as large enough to hold 20 Royal Albert Halls. The perimeter is roughly 2.7 miles ignoring the Long Water, or 3.3 miles if you walk round it.
Where is the Peter Pan statue?
By the Long Water, the northern inlet of the Serpentine on the Kensington Gardens side, among the swans and ducks. Walking round the Long Water adds about 0.6 miles to the park's perimeter route.
How do you get to Kensington Gardens?
Lancaster Gate and Queensway on the Central line and Bayswater on the Circle are each a few minutes' walk. London Paddington is about 500m north of West Carriage Drive, served by GWR, the Heathrow Express and the Elizabeth line, which makes the park an easy stop straight off a Heathrow train.
