Japan House is free, open until 8pm six days a week, and sits under 100 metres from High Street Kensington station. That combination is unusual in London: most free cultural spaces shut at 5pm or 6pm, which makes this one of the few you can reach after work and still have an hour inside.

Sundays and bank holidays are the exception, when it opens later and closes earlier, at midday to 6pm. Monday to Saturday it is 10am to 8pm.

We read the venue’s own visit page on 10 October 2026.

What it is

It describes itself as presenting the best of Japanese art, design, gastronomy, innovation and technology, at 101 to 111 Kensington High Street, W8 5SA. Admission is free, though a few events charge a participation fee. There is a free digital guide, and a cloakroom on the lower ground floor.

Getting there

High Street Kensington, on the District and Circle lines, is under 100 metres away. Several bus routes stop nearby, there are cycle stands and Santander Cycles docks, and the nearest car park is on Hornton Street.

Two things the visit page does not cover: whether photography is allowed, and the opening hours of the shop and the restaurant, which may differ from the building’s. Ask at the desk if either matters to your visit.
