There is one Harvey Nichols in London. People assume there are several, the way there are several of everything else at this end of the market, and there are not.
The whole chain is six shops: Knightsbridge, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Leeds and Manchester. One of them is in London, and it is the original.
The hours
Monday to Saturday: 10am to 8pm.
Sunday: 11.30am to 6pm.
No late night, unlike Selfridges two miles north, which runs to 10pm on weekdays. The store notes that hours can differ on public holidays.
The Sunday is the familiar six-hour shape that every large shop in England and Wales works to, with the doors opening at half past eleven.
Where it is
109 to 125 Knightsbridge, London SW1X 7RJ, on 020 3693 9940.
It sits on the corner at Knightsbridge station, which puts it about five minutes from Harrods. That proximity is the whole point of a visit: the two are the comparison, and doing both in an afternoon is the normal way to use them.
Harvey Nichols is the smaller, sharper, more fashion-led of the pair. Harrods is the bigger, grander, more touristed one. Which you prefer says more about you than about them.
Who owns it now
Worth knowing, because the name still carries an air of independence that the paperwork no longer supports.
The footer of Harvey Nichols’ own website reads: Frasers Group Trading Limited, trading as ‘Harvey Nichols’. The same statement appears on every page of the site, alongside the Frasers Plus credit product.
Frasers Group is the retail group built out of Sports Direct, which also now holds House of Fraser and a long list of other names. Whatever that means for the shop floor, the corporate position is published on their own pages rather than hidden.
What it is good at
Fashion, beauty and the food hall, in a building small enough to cross in a few minutes, which is the opposite of the Harrods problem.
If you have an hour rather than an afternoon, this is the more efficient of the two Knightsbridge department stores by a wide margin.
Our Knightsbridge page covers the area, and shopping in London covers where else to go.
How to plan it
With Harrods: do this one first, because it is smaller and you will have energy left.
After work: it shuts at 8pm, so this is not the late option. Selfridges is.
Sunday: 11.30 to 6, and the earlier half is the quieter one.
Looking for another London branch: there isn’t one.
