If you are under 30, Dulwich will sell you a £10 ticket. Unsubscribe from the newsletter and it stops.
“You can unsubscribe from the newsletter any time by logging into your account and updating your preferences. Just know: unsubscribing means you’ll lose access to Under 30s perks, including discounted tickets and partner offers.”
So the discount is not a concession, it is a membership benefit, and the membership is the mailing list. Leave the list and the price goes back up.
Worth knowing because most people treat a newsletter as something to escape from. Here it is the ticket.
What the Under 30s scheme actually gives you
Free to join, and better than most age concessions in London.
£10 exhibition entry, including the Collection and all public gallery spaces.
Perks from partners, which the gallery says include free cinema tickets.
The conditions, all firm:
Anyone aged 18 to 30. You must be under 31 both when you join and when you visit, and the membership expires automatically on your 31st birthday.
One discounted ticket per exhibition, per person. Not one per visit.
Non-transferable. You cannot buy one for a friend. If they are also 18 to 30 they sign up themselves.
Photo ID showing your date of birth is required when you collect the ticket or at the door.
No refunds or exchanges. The ticket is valid only for the date, time and exhibition booked.
And the step people miss: you have to sign up before you can buy at the Under 30s price. It is not applied at checkout.
Over 30, the equivalent is £46 a year
Become a Friend from £46 a year for unlimited access to temporary exhibitions and the Collection, plus discounts and priority booking.
Against a £10 under-30s exhibition ticket, the Friend membership pays back in roughly four or five exhibition visits, and covers the collection in between.
The garden opens two hours before the gallery, seven days a week
The most useful thing on this page for anyone local.
The Gallery is open 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Closed Mondays.
The Sculpture Garden is open 8am to 5pm, Monday to Sunday.
So on a Monday, when the gallery is shut, the garden is open. And on every other day it opens two hours earlier.
Advance booking is recommended to guarantee entry.
Free parking, inside the ULEZ and a Low Traffic Neighbourhood
Three facts that have to be read together, because two of them cancel the first.
“Free parking spaces are available on Gallery Road and College Road.” Free accessible parking is on Gallery Road for Blue Badge holders.
Then: “Gallery Road is now in the 24hr Ultra Low Emission Zone.”
And: “Dulwich Village is a Low Traffic Neighbourhood, with traffic restrictions at certain times of the day, Monday to Friday.”
So the parking costs nothing and getting the car there may cost a ULEZ charge and a camera fine. Check the Southwark Council restrictions before driving on a weekday.
There is also paid parking in Dulwich Park, opposite the College Road entrance.
Fifteen minutes from central London
Closer than its reputation suggests.
West Dulwich from London Victoria, North Dulwich from London Bridge, trains roughly every 15 minutes, and both stations a 10 minute walk.
By Underground: Victoria line to Brixton, then the P4 bus from stop T to ‘Dulwich Picture Gallery’, or the train from Brixton to West Dulwich.
By Overground: Peckham Rye, then the train or the 37 bus from stop N to North Dulwich.
Buses: P4 stops outside the gallery café on College Road, from Lewisham or Brixton. The 3 runs from Crystal Palace or Oxford Street to West Dulwich. The 37 from Peckham Rye or Putney. The P13 from New Cross to Streatham, alighting at Dulwich College.
Bike parking is in the gardens.
The oldest public art gallery in the country
Dulwich has been “unlocking art since 1811”, which makes it the first purpose-built public art gallery in England, opened years before the National Gallery.
It sits in Dulwich Village, between Brixton and Peckham, with entrances on College Road and Gallery Road.
Alongside the permanent Collection there is a rotating exhibition programme, a Sculpture Garden, and the ArtPlay Pavilion, a space for under-8s to discover art through play.
How to plan it
Under 31: join first, then book. £10, and the ticket dies if you leave the mailing list.
One Under 30s ticket per exhibition, non-transferable, photo ID at the door.
Over 30 and going more than four times: the £46 Friend membership.
Monday: the gallery is closed, the Sculpture Garden is not.
Early morning: the garden opens at 8am, two hours before the gallery.
Driving on a weekday: check the Low Traffic Neighbourhood, and note Gallery Road is inside the 24-hour ULEZ even though the parking is free.
From central London: Victoria to West Dulwich, about 15 minutes plus a 10 minute walk.

How to get in
The Under 30s scheme gives 10 pound exhibition tickets to anyone aged 18 to 30, but the gallery states that unsubscribing from its newsletter removes access to the discounted tickets and partner perks, so the price depends on staying on the mailing list. One discounted ticket per exhibition per person, non-transferable, with photo ID showing date of birth required at the door. The Sculpture Garden opens at 8am seven days a week, two hours before the gallery and including Mondays when the gallery is shut. Parking on Gallery Road and College Road is free, but Gallery Road is inside the 24 hour ULEZ and Dulwich Village is a Low Traffic Neighbourhood with weekday restrictions.
Where to go next
London’s art galleries compares them, and the Wallace Collection and the Courtauld are the other great house collections.
Peckham is the next stop north, and Crystal Palace Park is a bus ride south.

Is Dulwich Picture Gallery open on Mondays?

Yes, there are free spaces on Gallery Road and College Road, with free accessible parking on Gallery Road for Blue Badge holders. But Gallery Road is inside the 24-hour ULEZ, and Dulwich Village is a Low Traffic Neighbourhood with weekday traffic restrictions, so check Southwark Council's restrictions before driving.
