There is a Michelin starred vegan restaurant in London. That is the answer to the question most people arrive with, and almost nothing written about vegan food in this city leads with it.

Plates, on Old Street, holds one Michelin star, and the Michelin Guide lists its cuisine as Vegan. It is also open four days a week, takes no walk ins, requires a deposit on every booking and has not accommodated anyone under twelve since January 2026.

That is the shape of the whole subject. The serious vegan rooms in London open four or five days a week and are hedged with conditions. The ones that open every day from nine in the morning are the ones nobody writes about. Both are worth knowing, and which you want depends entirely on how much planning you are prepared to do.

The starred one

Plates, Old Street

Chef Kirk Haworth came up through Michelin starred kitchens and now cooks entirely from plants. The room seats a maximum of six to a table and releases its diary in seasonal windows.

Read the conditions before you fall in love with it. There is no bar and no waiting area, so they ask you to arrive at the exact time of your booking and will hold the table fifteen minutes. You cannot add people to a confirmed booking, only remove them. They cannot cater for nut, soya or allium allergies, because all three run through the menu. The restaurant is cashless and, by their own statement, not wheelchair accessible. Since January 2026 they have been unable to accommodate babies or children under twelve.

The booking is the hard part and it moves. They release reservations in seasonal windows roughly three months out rather than on a rolling daily basis. Rechecked on 2 October 2026: the book is open through Saturday 21 November and the December to February window still has not been released. Their own answer to when it will be still reads towards the end of September, which has passed, so the honest position is that the date is not published. Plates announces each window through its newsletter rather than on a published date, so sign up to that, join the waitlist on Tock and select multiple dates rather than watching one.

The French one

Gauthier Soho, Romilly Street

Alexis Gauthier spent twenty five years in classical French kitchens and then took the animals out. His own line is that he feels lucky to serve French gastronomy without using them.

Two set menus: an eight course Grand Dîner and a five course Petit Dîner
Standing
Classical French fine dining, entirely plant based

The menu you can order depends on the hour, and this catches people out badly. On a Friday or Saturday the eight course Grand Dîner does not start until half past seven, while the five course Petit Dîner is served at five o'clock and at no other time. Tuesday to Thursday both run from five. Saturday lunch from one o'clock offers either. So book the time that matches the menu you want, not the other way round. Two sister restaurants sit ten minutes away, 123V in Mayfair and Studio Gauthier in Fitzrovia.

The ones open every day

This is the half of the subject that the fine dining lists skip, and for most people it is the more useful half.

Mildreds, Soho

Vegan since 1988, which makes it older than most of the people writing about veganism, and open from nine in the morning until eleven at night.

Mildreds Soho

Nearest

Hours
Monday to Saturday 9am to 11pm, Sunday 9am to 10pm. Seven days a week

London's plant based pioneers, serving since 1988

Fourteen hours a day, seven days a week, which after the four day weeks above is a genuine relief. The free carafe on a Monday to Wednesday with the set menu is published rather than whispered. Two menus worth knowing about: there is a pre theatre menu, and there is a separate onion and garlic free menu, which is unusual anywhere and very unusual in a kitchen this size. Breakfast runs from nine. Dogs are welcome and there is outdoor seating. There are further branches at Camden, King's Cross and Covent Garden.

Mallow, Borough Market

Entirely plant based, in the heart of Borough Market

The same seven day, fourteen hour pattern as Mildreds and in the best food market in London, which makes it the easy answer for a group with one vegan in it. They cook seasonally with minimal waste and source from small producers, several of them on their own doorstep in the market. Their festive root to tip menus run from 18 November. The name is a British plant that is edible root, stem, leaf and flower, which tells you the approach.

The one that is not actually vegan

Tendril, Oxford Circus

Worth flagging clearly, because their own name for themselves is the honest bit and a lot of round ups quietly drop the qualifier.

Their own description: a mostly vegan kitchen and bar

They call themselves mostly vegan and they mean it, so if you need a guaranteed vegan kitchen this is not it and they are being straight with you about that. What they are is vegetable first, explicitly moving away from fake meat and heavily processed substitutes. Three timings to note: no lunch at all on a Monday, Sunday stops at four in the afternoon, and last orders for food are at a quarter to ten despite a half ten close. The wine list is vegan and comes from small European producers.

The best vegetarian restaurants in London are not the same list

This is worth separating, because a search for the best vegetarian restaurants in London and a search for the best vegan ones return the same round ups, and they should not. Every restaurant on this page is vegan, which means a vegetarian will eat well at all of them. The reverse does not hold.

Tendril above is the clearest case. It describes itself as mostly vegan rather than vegan, and that qualifier is the honest part of the name. If you are vegetarian it widens the menu. If you are vegan it is the one entry here you have to read the dish description on.

So: if you are booking for a vegetarian, this page is a safe list and a short one. If you are booking for a table with one vegetarian in it, the better move is a restaurant with a serious vegetarian section rather than a vegan restaurant, and the Indian rooms do that better than any other category in London.

Practical notes

Check which days the room opens before anything else. Plates is Wednesday to Saturday. Gauthier is Tuesday to Saturday with lunch on Saturday alone. Mildreds and Mallow are seven days. More vegan dinners fail on the day of the week than on availability.

At Gauthier, the hour decides the menu. Five o'clock on a Friday gets you five courses, half past seven gets you eight, and there is no other arrangement.

Ask about alliums, not just animal products. Plates cannot cater for nut, soya or allium allergies at all. Mildreds publishes a separate onion and garlic free menu. These are opposite ends of the same problem and neither is obvious from a menu.

Plant based is not always vegan. Tendril says mostly vegan on its own front page. Plates and Mallow say plant based. Mildreds and the Michelin Guide say vegan. If it matters to you, the wording is doing real work.

Everything here was taken from each restaurant's own published information and rechecked in full on 28 September 2026, except the Michelin distinction for Plates, which was confirmed in the Michelin Guide's own listing. Booking windows and opening days change. Confirm before you travel.

Where to go next

The Michelin guide puts Plates in context with the rest of the starred rooms in London. The restaurants guide holds the wider list.

For kitchens where vegan is a menu rather than the whole restaurant, the Thai guide covers Som Saa, which publishes a full separate vegan menu, and Speedboat, which has one on request.

By neighbourhood: Soho for Gauthier and Mildreds, Shoreditch for Plates, and Borough Market for Mallow.

Questions we get asked

What is the best vegan restaurant in London?

Plates on Old Street, which holds one Michelin star and which the Michelin Guide lists under the cuisine Vegan. It opens Wednesday to Saturday, takes no walk ins and requires a deposit. For classical French cooking without animals, Gauthier Soho on Romilly Street. For somewhere open seven days a week from nine in the morning, Mildreds in Soho or Mallow at Borough Market.

Are there any Michelin star vegan restaurants in London?

Yes. Plates at 320 Old Street holds one Michelin star and appears in the Michelin Guide with its cuisine listed as Vegan, in the Guide's top price band. Chef Kirk Haworth came up through Michelin starred kitchens before moving to plant based cooking. It is reservation only, seats a maximum of six to a table, and releases its bookings in seasonal windows roughly three months ahead.

How do you get a table at Plates in London?

Through Tock, in seasonal release windows rather than on a rolling basis, and every booking takes a 65 pound deposit a head that is refundable outside 48 hours. On 2 October 2026 the book ran through Saturday 21 November and the December to February window had still not been released. There are no walk ins at all. Join the waitlist for cancellations, select several dates and times rather than one, and turn notifications on. The maximum table is six and you cannot add people to a confirmed booking.

Where can you eat vegan food late in London?

Mildreds in Soho and Mallow at Borough Market both run to eleven at night Monday to Saturday and ten on Sunday, seven days a week. Tendril near Oxford Circus closes at half past ten but takes its last food order at a quarter to ten. The fine dining rooms are the opposite: Plates and Gauthier are both closed on Sunday and Monday entirely.

Is Tendril vegan?

Mostly, and they say so themselves rather than hiding it. Their own description is a mostly vegan kitchen and bar, so the menu is vegetable led rather than guaranteed free of animal products. If you need certainty, Plates, Mallow and Mildreds all describe themselves as entirely plant based or vegan. The wine list at Tendril is vegan throughout.

Is there vegan fine dining in London?

Two rooms in particular. Plates on Old Street holds a Michelin star and serves a seasonal tasting menu, Wednesday to Saturday only. Gauthier Soho serves classical French gastronomy entirely without animal products, as an eight course Grand Dîner or a five course Petit Dîner, with two sister restaurants in Mayfair and Fitzrovia. Both are closed Sunday and Monday.

Which London vegan restaurant is best for a group?

Mallow at Borough Market or Mildreds in Soho, because both are open seven days a week for fourteen hours and neither caps the table at six. Plates limits its main dining room to six guests and cannot increase a party size once the booking is confirmed, so a group that grows after booking has to start again.
