The name at the top of every fried chicken list in London no longer has a restaurant. Chick ‘n’ Sours closed its restaurants after a ten year run and now operates as pub residencies and delivery kitchens, which is on its own website in its own words. If a guide is sending you to a Chick ‘n’ Sours restaurant, it has not checked since.
Here is where the chicken actually is, with the addresses and the hours each operator publishes.
Chick ‘n’ Sours, and where it went
It started as a stall at Latitude in 2011, became cult restaurants for over a decade, and has gone back to residencies, delivery kitchens and festivals. The company describes the restaurant years in the past tense.
Three residencies, and the rules differ at each:
Crown and Castle, 600 Kingsland Road, E8 4AH, in Dalston. Monday to Thursday from 5pm, Friday to Sunday from midday, and walk-ins only. A pub with darts and football on. Our Dalston page covers what else is on that stretch.
Big Chill, 257 to 259 Pentonville Road, N1 9NL, King’s Cross. Monday to Sunday from midday. Three floors with a year round roof terrace, and the venue publishes a reservations route.
Corner Corner, Maritime Street, Canada Water, SE16 7LL. Friday to Sunday from midday only, which is the one to get wrong. It is a food hall with a vertical farm and live music.
There are also delivery kitchens on Deliveroo covering Kilburn, Finchley, Fulham, Peckham and Walthamstow.
Coqfighter
Four sites: Liverpool Street, Soho, King’s Cross and Finsbury Park. Hours are the same across all of them, which is rare and makes planning simple: Monday to Saturday midday to 10pm, Sunday midday to 9pm. It takes bookings.
If you want a fried chicken dinner that behaves like a restaurant booking rather than a hunt, this is the answer.
Butchies
Buttermilk fried chicken, handmade fresh in store daily by their own description. Three sites, and they are spread for commuters rather than clustered:
Canary Wharf at 25 North Colonnade, E14 5HD. Shoreditch at 22 Rivington Street, EC2A 3DY, on 020 7729 3876. Victoria inside Market Hall, 191 Victoria Street, SW1E 5NE.
The Shoreditch site is on the same street as Callooh Callay, so it works as the thing you eat before the bar.
How to choose
For a booked table, Coqfighter. Four sites, consistent hours, reservations taken.
For the original, Chick ‘n’ Sours at the Crown and Castle, accepting that it is walk-ins only and that Monday to Thursday it does not start until five.
For lunch near an office, Butchies, which is the one positioned at Canary Wharf, Victoria and Shoreditch rather than at night spots.
For the wider category, the best burgers in London and the cheap eats list cover what else is in this price range, with the prices printed.
